Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from before the festival of the time of the giving of our Torah, in which you write that you feel something is lacking for you in Torah or fear of Heaven, etc., but you do not mention anything regarding your study in Nigleh or your schedule of learning Chassidus—which are certainly not as they should be—and therefore it is no wonder about the aforementioned feeling. Since you ask for advice: before prayer (on weekdays) in the morning (set aside some coins for charity) and learn some subject in Chassidus; these two things are advice so that your prayer will be accepted. And since the beginning of requests for human needs—the twelve middle blessings—is for graciousness of understanding, so too be careful with immersion as prescribed by Ezra and study Torah with diligence and perseverance. As Rashi explains (from Sifra) on "Im Bechukosai Teileichu" (If you walk in My statutes), that you should labor in Torah; and it is already known the ruling of our Sages: if one says "I have not toiled and I have found," do not believe him. Surely you know about the three daily study portions established by my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe—of blessed memory—Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya as is well known. At least from now on be careful to fulfill them. My strong hope is that if you do all the above, then little by little your situation will improve. Even though your awareness that you are lacking and need to improve will become stronger, nevertheless at the same time during learning and while performing mitzvos with extra care there should be joy in your heart—as explained at length in Tanya that these two matters do not contradict each other.

With blessing for Torah study with fear of Heaven.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that spiritual fulfillment comes through consistent Torah study, learning Chassidus, giving charity before prayer, and performing mitzvos with joy. Recognizing one's shortcomings should not diminish happiness during mitzvah observance; both can coexist harmoniously.
