Tomchei Tmimim, Lod is a branch of the central Lubavitch yeshivah network, located in Lod, Israel. The institution serves as a center for Torah study and Chassidic education, playing a significant role in the dissemination of Chabad teachings and values in Israel.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, maintained an active and guiding correspondence with the administration and students of Tomchei Tmimim, Lod. In his letters, the Rebbe addressed both practical and spiritual matters concerning the yeshivah's activities and growth.
In a letter dated 18 Menachem Av 5711 (1951), the Rebbe responded to the administration's proposal to send an emissary abroad for fundraising. He approved the idea in principle, but emphasized two key conditions: first, that the mission be coordinated with other Lubavitch institutions to avoid confusion or friction, and possibly even be conducted as a joint campaign; second, that the emissaries should not focus solely on collecting funds, but must also engage in spreading Torah and Chassidus, in accordance with the directive of the previous Rebbe. The Rebbe stressed that true success in material efforts is dependent on spiritual outreach, encapsulating this with the phrase, "Take materiality and sow spirituality."
In further correspondence, the Rebbe gave practical advice regarding fundraising for building projects, such as utilizing the influx of tourists to Israel as potential supporters, and encouraged official communication with the central Tomchei Tmimim office for additional assistance. He also addressed logistical concerns about sending emissaries to overlapping destinations, highlighting the importance of coordination within the broader Lubavitch network.
The Rebbe's letters also reflect his personal attention to individual students at Tomchei Tmimim, Lod. He encouraged students to study foundational Chassidic texts, such as the opening chapter of Tanya, especially in preparation for significant milestones like Bar Mitzvah. The Rebbe advised integrating both practical mitzvah observance and spiritual preparation, such as daily charity and reciting specific chapters of Tehillim (Psalms).
Additionally, the Rebbe directed seekers of Chabad philosophy to connect with the yeshivah's teachers and mentors, emphasizing the importance of establishing a relationship with a spiritual guide ("aseh lecha rav") and the necessity of accepting guidance with humility and commitment.
The Rebbe's correspondence with Tomchei Tmimim, Lod is characterized by a blend of practical leadership and deep spiritual counsel. He consistently stressed the integration of material and spiritual efforts, the value of unity and coordination within the Chabad movement, and the importance of personal growth and mentorship in the life of every student and emissary.
