The Avrech Yitzchak Yehudah sheyichyeh
Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 12th of Menachem Av, in which you write that you are studying at Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim in Lod and that on the upcoming Erev Yom Kippur, G‑d willing, will be your Bar Mitzvah and you have begun putting on tefillin. May it be in a good and successful hour, and you should ask your mashpia and rosh yeshivah to learn with you—emphasizing as needed—the beginning of chapter 41 in Tanya regarding tefillin. Just as one begins putting on tefillin physically as preparation for the time of obligation according to Shulchan Aruch, so too is it necessary to prepare spiritually. May Hashem grant you success.
It is worthwhile that, without a vow, from today until your Bar Mitzvah you set aside some coins for tzedakah every weekday before davening and recite Tehillim chapter 13 after davening, in addition to the daily Tehillim portion as divided for the days of the month. May Hashem grant you success in this as well.
Blessings,
In the name of the Rebbe shlita,
Mazkir
Also contemplate how the infinite light of Ein Sof blessed be He—which surrounds all worlds and fills all worlds—is the supreme will vested in the letters and wisdom of Torah or in tzitzis and these tefillin. By reading or wearing them, one draws His light upon himself; that is, upon the Divine portion within his body—to be included and nullified within His blessed light. Specifically regarding tefillin: to nullify and include one's own wisdom and understanding within his G‑dly soul into the wisdom and understanding of Ein Sof blessed be He as specifically vested in Parshas "Kadesh" and "Vehaya Ki Yeviacha." That is: not to use one's wisdom or understanding except for Hashem alone.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that preparing for Bar Mitzvah involves both physical mitzvos like tefillin and spiritual growth through study, charity, prayer, and deep contemplation on connecting one's intellect with G‑dliness.
