To the esteemed worshippers—and especially the gabbaim—of the Shomrei Shabbat Synagogue and those who regularly set times for Torah study there. May Hashem be upon you; may you live!

Shalom u'Vrachah!

It was with pleasure that I learned through Haraha"ch vavac"h iy"a nu"n etc. Hary"l Ras'kin about your regular public Torah study sessions at the aforementioned synagogue. The great importance of studying fixed Torah lessons in a synagogue certainly needs no lengthy explanation, as it is explained in many places in our holy books and thoroughly clarified in the letters and talks of our holy Rebbeim, our leaders of blessed memory. I write only to encourage and urge further effort, following our Sages' saying: "We only urge those who are already eager." This encouragement is to strive to increase the number of participants in Torah study sessions—both in Nigleh (the revealed dimension) and Pnimiyus HaTorah (the inner dimension), which in our generation has been revealed through Chassidus—and also to strive to include every synagogue member in this effort.

This is hinted at at the beginning of this week's Torah portion: "VeAtah Tetzaveh... Veyikchu eilecha shemen zayit... leha'alot ner tamid" (And you shall command... they shall take for you pure olive oil... to kindle a constant lamp). Both aspects of Torah study—the revealed and the inner (the light within Torah)—are alluded to in this verse: "to kindle a lamp," "they shall take olive oil." As our Sages say: "One who sees olive oil in a dream should anticipate the light of Torah," as it says: "olive oil..." We are obligated to always engage in Torah study—literally day and night, both physically and spiritually—whether during the time of the Beis HaMikdash or during exile, about which it is said: "Who dwells with them amidst their impurity."

As hinted at in Scripture and explained by our Sages: "Always—even amidst impurity." Through this, light will be drawn down for all Jews wherever they dwell. As further hinted at in Scripture and explained by our Sages: Why do we need a lamp? To illuminate for us—to kindle a constant lamp so that its light is always before us—specifically before Bnei Yisrael. As further hinted at in Scripture and explained by our Sages: "And you shall command Bnei Yisrael"—because they crowned Me as King over them at the sea; from then until now, twice daily when reciting Shema—in evening and morning—as our Sages say: one should accept upon himself the yoke of Heaven's sovereignty: My kingship above, below, and to all four directions.

The preface to all this is as stated: "Kasis laMaor" (crushed for illumination), as explained by Rabbeinu HaZaken (the Alter Rebbe), author of Tanya (the authority on Nistar/hidden Torah) and Shulchan Aruch (the authority on Nigleh/revealed Torah): through being crushed (and my soul will be as dust to all—it becomes) for illumination (open my heart in Your Torah—and up to the light within Torah).

With honor and blessing for good news in all mentioned above,
M. Schneersohn

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that communal Torah study brings spiritual light to every Jew. By increasing participation—both in revealed teachings and Chassidus—we fulfill an ongoing obligation that uplifts individuals and communities alike.
