B"H, 11 Tishrei, 5719. Brooklyn.
To the participants in the first farbrengen of the Shemitah year, the year 5719 may it be upon us for good, in the city of Toronto — may G‑d be upon them and grant them life.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
I was pleased to receive your letter from Motzaei Shabbat Shuvah, reporting about the aforementioned first farbrengen. May it be G‑d's will that this be a good beginning for the entire year — the seventh year, which is a Sabbath for Hashem. This alludes to and is connected with the day that is entirely Shabbat and rest for eternal life (see Even Ezra and Ramban on "like the day of Shabbat," etc., Vayikra 25:2).
It is explained in Chassidus that this is the highest level in the reward of the World to Come, which is generally divided into two periods: one where there is no rest in Olam HaBa (the World to Come), as they go from strength to strength; and from there they ascend to a period of Shabbat and rest for eternal life. Since the ultimate perfection of the world at that time depends on our actions and service throughout all the time of exile (Tanya, beginning of chapter 37), it follows that our service must also reflect this concept. Clearly, this is achieved by completely removing oneself from all worldly matters — not only physical matters but even spiritual ones; not only human logic but even holy logic. The service must transcend reason entirely, reaching "with all your might." This is hinted at in our Sages' statement: service not for the sake of receiving reward — not even spiritual reward. This also relates to what is written: "Mi li baShamayim v'imcha lo chafatzti ba'aretz" (Who do I have in heaven? And with You I desire nothing on earth), as explained by Rabbeinu HaZaken who would say: "I want nothing at all; I do not want Your Gan Eden; I do not want Your Olam HaBa; I want nothing but You alone" (see Shoresh Mitzvas HaTefillah by Admor HaTzt"z, end of chapter 40).
And regarding this it is said: "Lo niflet hi... lo baShamayim hi..." (It is not hidden... it is not in heaven...), and as our Sages say there: if it were in heaven you would have to go up after it and learn it (Devarim 30:12). And since we are assured that Hashem does not make unreasonable demands on His creations, surely we have been given the abilities for this. And this suffices.
With blessings for a joyous festival.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Shemitah embodies selfless divine service — striving beyond personal or even spiritual gain toward pure connection with G‑d alone. Every Jew has been given strength to reach this level through sincere effort during exile.
