Avraham Sender Namatzov was a Chassid who corresponded with the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, notably providing the Rebbe with valuable historical information regarding students of the Lubavitch yeshivah, Tomchei Temimim, prior to 1910.
The Rebbe expressed warm appreciation to Avraham Sender Namatzov for sending a detailed list of the temimim (students) who studied in Lubavitch until the year 5670 (1910). The Rebbe noted that he had been searching for such information for a long time and thanked Namatzov for fulfilling this need. The Rebbe further encouraged Namatzov to record, as precisely as possible, his own periods of study in Tomchei Temimim, as well as those of his acquaintances, to further enrich the historical record.
The Rebbe also responded positively to an insightful comment from Namatzov regarding a teaching of the Sages about quality and quantity, specifically the idea that the Holy One, blessed be He, appeased the moon by increasing its hosts. The Rebbe agreed with the observation, noting both distinctions and commonalities in such matters, and referenced Tosafos in Sukkah 8b as a source.
In his letter, the Rebbe enclosed a general Chanukah letter and concluded with blessings for Namatzov's success in establishing fixed times for Torah study, emphasizing the importance of including regular study of Chassidus. The Rebbe took the opportunity to encourage Namatzov once again to make appropriate efforts to strengthen both his own and others' commitment to the study of Chassidus, reflecting the Rebbe's broader educational and spiritual priorities.
