B"H, during the days of Sefirah, 5728.
Brooklyn, NY. — To the thirteenth annual convention — of Nshei U'Bnos Chabad — may Hashem grant them life.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
This year's annual convention is taking place during auspicious days connected with Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Sivan, the third month, the month of Matan Torah.
The Torah tells us that on Rosh Chodesh Sivan, the Jews arrived at Mount Sinai and then attained a level of unity (oneness). As indicated in the words 'Vayichan Sham Yisrael' (they camped there as one) – the Jewish people rested there – all as one, united and unified by the thought of accepting the Torah and mitzvos. The importance of this moment is clear from our Sages' statement that the unity of the Jewish people was itself the reason for Matan Torah.
It has been emphasized many times that there are vital moments for Klal Yisrael, especially matters of Torah and Judaism, where women play a very important role. One such matter is unity within the family, where women hold the main keys to unity between parents and children, between parents themselves, and between siblings. In this area, as is evident from experience, women and mothers have much to say—often even more than men and fathers. This is one reason why a woman is called 'akeres habayis' (foundation of the home).
It is also clear that unity among Jews on a broader scale—the unity of one family with another and unity among all Israel in general—depends on unity within each family. Where there is unfortunately a lack of unity in a family, one cannot expect unity between families. Yet even when family unity is at its best, there still remains the challenge of achieving unity among Jews as a whole; for true Jewish unity is based—as noted above—on Torah and mitzvos.
If at all times it has not been easy to achieve unity, this problem has become much more complicated in our present era of freedom in free countries—where people are no longer restricted as they once were regarding their place of residence, occupation, educational institutions, opinions, outlooks, etc. All these differences and divisions—geographical, social, cultural, etc.—are byproducts of contemporary freedom.
The newly created circumstances have brought new problems and difficulties which must nevertheless be viewed as challenges. With an appropriate approach and firm will they can be solved.
I hope that this year's convention of Nshei U'Bnos Chabad will devote necessary attention to these mentioned problems and their solutions—not underestimating thereby the many obligations and far-reaching possibilities of Jewish women in general and Nshei U'Bnos Chabad in particular.
For it is certain that whatever duties Divine Providence places upon someone are never beyond their abilities or possibilities which Divine Providence grants them to fulfill these tasks in life.
The main thing is that this convention should lead to increased and expanded activities—for action is what counts—and may Hashem help that you accomplish much to your fullest ability with joy and gladness of heart.
With blessings for success and good tidings both spiritually and materially together.
Summary
This letter teaches that true Jewish unity begins within each family through women's efforts; overcoming modern challenges requires determination rooted in Torah values. Women are empowered by Divine Providence to fulfill their vital roles with joy.
