Shalom u'Vrachah!

Your letter reached me with a considerable delay. I was pleased with its content, especially the spirit in which it was written, which demonstrates your connection to our shared eternal heritage. As the verse says: Torah Tzivah Lanu Moshe Morashah Kehillas Yaakov ("Moshe commanded us the Torah as an inheritance for the congregation of Yaakov"). If such a relationship to this heritage is expected from every Jew—and obviously it is not meant to be kept under glass but rather as the words Tzivah Lanu Moshe indicate, as Moshe Rabbeinu wanted and instructed: that Torah should permeate daily life with vitality—then certainly it is expected in even greater measure from someone who—according to his writing—is descended from a rabbinic and Chassidic family.

And regarding what you write that you are not a "professional" Chassid—of course there is no such thing at all; for one who treats it as a profession is not a Chassid. Chassidus is built on inner enthusiasm and deep attachment until it becomes the person's very essence, according to the two versions (or main streams) in Chassidus: Nusach Polin (sometimes called Nusach Chagat—Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferes), where enthusiasm expresses itself also outwardly; and Nusach Chabad—Chochmah Binah Daas—with emphasis on intellect. And surely there is no need to elaborate on this for you.

I only wish to add that the common denominator and main task of every Jew—especially in our times—is not to be satisfied with only knowing or feeling something good in one's mind or heart; rather it must descend into all 248 limbs in actual deeds. As our Sages underline: Maaseh Hu HaIkar ("Action is the main thing"). Similarly, one should not be satisfied keeping good things for oneself alone; everyone must do what they can so that this becomes the property and permeates the life of every Jew they can reach—for after all all Jews are limbs of one body, a complete stature of Knesses Yisrael.

And returning to what was written above—if from every Jew it is demanded to fulfill this main task for which each Jew receives special strengths—all the more so it is demanded from someone descended from a rabbinic family who—in addition to the general strengths of Torah Tzivah Lanu Moshe Morashah Kehillas Yaakov—inherits special strengths from parents and ancestors.

Naturally I will be pleased and it will give me special satisfaction to hear good news from you regarding all the above.

With honor and blessing,
M. Schneersohn

In response to your suggestion to write an appraisal about a certain personality—in general this is not my matter, especially regarding someone who is no longer among the living here. However since this matter has already been taken up and my lack of response could be misinterpreted, I must at least say a few words about this by dividing it into two points: (a) The person as an individual—which includes—and indeed first and foremost—their personal life; (b) The approach and work of the person concerned—in both I sharply disagree with your appraisal. Beginning with the second point:

Even if one were to accept that some decades ago spreading Chassidus more broadly required stylizing it until it resembled an approach foreign to Chassidus—considering this as preparatory step toward eventually reaching Chassidus—it is certain that in recent years there was no necessity for this. Thus this approach only gave a false image of Chassidus—from what is truly authentic Torah's truth. My personal opinion—also based on my years living in Germany—is that even then one could have spread authentic Chassidus content in its true form without many exceptions.

Returning to the first point—and this also explains why these are two different matters—the opposite of Toras HaChassidus which teaches that a person and his work must be closely connected (until they become one entity). But according to what was written above this question falls away.

Regarding a person—as mentioned above—the primary judgment must be according to their personal life and what they were immersed in—especially on cardinal issues. Concerning the individual discussed here: there is his stance on the so-called conflict between Jews and Arabs in Eretz Yisrael; his position regarding accepting an honor medal from Germany (which truly no one cares about—and it's still the same Germany as before—even those who claim otherwise are just trying to convince others); certainly not someone who lived there for decades and absorbed their culture even after fleeing/being expelled from there. There is also the unresolved issue—or as some say precisely clarified issue—regarding his wife.

In line with the spirit at the start of my letter: if for every Jew influencing others positively (Zacha Vezikah Es HaRabim) is among their greatest achievements—it follows logically that its opposite applies too—as stated in Mishnah; how much more so for someone who wanted and did everything possible so he would be accepted as a guide and role model etc.—the three aforementioned examples from personal life are sufficiently characteristic; then come stories from those who lived in his city/area during his later years.

I regret having to write all this; but truthfully that's how things are.

May it be His will that since I have stepped out of my usual bounds by writing these expressions—it should at least bring about desirable results: that you—and all those influenced by him—should reassess your attitude towards his approach and him personally, moving toward our Torah—the Torah of truth—which together with being Toras Emes is also Toras Chaim—a Torah (from "hora'ah", instruction) which shows how life should be lived so that life deserves truly being called real life.

Summary

The Rebbe emphasizes living one's Jewish heritage actively—not just intellectually or emotionally—and calls for honest evaluation of leaders based on both their teachings and personal conduct. True connection comes through sincere action rooted in Torah values.
