Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 25th of Tevet, in which you write about the shidduch that both parties find agreeable, but the girl's family is objecting. Even though you mention the reason given for their refusal—there is an impression that their deeper reason is that they desire a more complete Yirat Shamayim on your part. If this is so, it is understood and obvious that you should fulfill this demand—not only because her family requests it, but primarily because it is a commandment of our holy Torah, a Torah of life, and we are commanded to always ascend in holiness. If this applies everywhere and at all times, how much more so in our days and especially in Eretz HaKodesh (the Holy Land), about which it is said: 'The eyes of Hashem your G‑d are upon it from the beginning of the year until year's end.' And when preparing for such a decisive and vital step as building an everlasting Jewish home, this requirement is essential and vital. There is nothing that stands in the way of willpower.
Together with this—and since a person must do what depends on him in a natural way—you should try through friends and acquaintances of her family to influence those who are objecting to change their minds.
Since everything happens by Divine Providence—and you mention in your letter that your grandfather was among the founders and first members of the community of mekubalim—I have both an obligation (and privilege) to point out to you the absolute necessity and personal duty to set fixed times for studying the inner dimension of Torah, which in our generation has been revealed through Chassidus. To elaborate on this at length would be superfluous.
Blessings for good news in all matters mentioned above.
In the name of the Rebbe Shlita,
Secretary
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that spiritual growth is essential not only for shidduch success but as a core Torah value. One should address concerns sincerely while also using natural means to resolve obstacles. Regular study of Chassidus strengthens one's foundation.
