Disappointment Over Misused Talents and Guidance to Remain in Yeshiva

The Rebbe expresses deep disappointment that the recipient has not used his talents in service of Hashem and even led others astray. He urges him to accept responsibility, not to leave yeshiva, and to see himself as a builder of its spiritual structure, encouraging him to be a positive example.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 24th of Adar Sheni, and I must begin my letter by saying that I was extremely disappointed by your letter, in addition to my general disappointment regarding the matter overall. Surely it is unnecessary to repeat again that it is self-evident—and this has been discussed many times at farbrengens—that the Holy One, blessed be He, did not create anything in vain. Therefore, everyone must utilize their talents, especially in line with the teaching of the Gemara in Kiddushin: Ani Lo Nivreisi Ela LeShamesh Es Koni ("I was only created to serve my Maker"). Seeing in you the talent to influence your surroundings and also to lead friends, I was certain you would use this in accordance with our Sages' statement above so that they too would become closer to serving their Maker.

Therefore, when it became known that you gave advice and led them in the opposite direction—and from your writing it appears this is indeed what happened—it made a very strong impression on me, as mentioned above. Nevertheless, taking into account that there is no righteous person on earth who does only good and never sins [I have] considered that by recognizing this as a failure—as you yourself write in your letter—you will accept its consequences. When one wants to free oneself from an inappropriate act or failure, it is not enough just to try to forget about it and do nothing more; rather, if a consequence or punishment follows, you will have enough strength to recognize: "Since I am guilty, I deserve this punishment." And even if you think the punishment does not match the failure, you should at least consider that as someone involved personally, you cannot judge objectively and will likely minimize your own guilt.

Secondly—even after considering all this—if the punishment still seems too harsh, then the older a person is who caused the failure (especially when it concerns a group and this person was a leader giving advice), one must demand more from oneself and not expect leniency compared to others. From your letter I see that you view the punishment as an affront to your honor and existence; therefore you want to retaliate by leaving yeshiva.

Thirdly—which is a great wonder and disappointment for me—I was sure that you (and generally all yeshiva students) see yeshiva as one should: not as guests who come for a while and then leave after learning for some time with a farewell handshake with the "host," but rather with an understanding that a yeshiva is built not only by its heads and mashpi'im but also by its students. Therefore they should view it as a spiritual building where each must contribute his part—not treating it as something optional or unrelated during free time but acting with dedication as one does for his own property or building his own home.

It goes without saying that with such an attitude no one would ever think of punishing yeshiva itself (!) or its administration (!) by leaving! There is a well-known analogy: when someone twists his left foot around his right foot he does not take a whip to punish his right foot; instead he seeks solutions so it won't happen again.

I write all this not at all to rebuke but rather to express my disappointment and hope that the strengths invested in you and the talents Hashem has given you will not allow your evil inclination to overpower you so that you leave yeshiva—where you can study Torah with awe of Heaven both Nigleh (revealed Torah) and Chassidus. May Hashem help you become an example—a model—for your other friends.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches us never to waste our G‑d-given talents or abandon our responsibilities due to disappointment or pride. Instead, we must accept consequences maturely and remain dedicated builders within our spiritual communities.
