Correspondence with the Rebbe

The students of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch, Paris received direct guidance and blessings from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. In a letter dated 27 Teves, 5712 (1952), the Rebbe responded to questions posed by many of the yeshivah's students. Drawing on a teaching from his revered father-in-law, the Rebbe Rayatz, the Rebbe explained that just as rain benefits only a field that is plowed and sown, so too are blessings most effective when recipients prepare themselves through effort and diligence.

The Rebbe elaborated that for bnei Torah and yeshivah students, "plowing" means adhering strictly to the yeshivah's study schedule, even when it requires personal sacrifice, such as less sleep or comfort, and overcoming laziness. "Sowing" refers to studying Torah with diligence and perseverance. With this preparation, the students are assured of drawing down great blessing, success, and understanding in their studies.

The Rebbe assured the students that he would mention them for success in Torah study and fear of Heaven when visiting the resting place of his father-in-law, the previous Rebbe. He also encouraged them to recite Tehillim daily according to the monthly division and to study at least a few verses from the weekly Torah portion each day. The tone of the letter is warm, encouraging, and filled with spiritual guidance, emphasizing both the students' efforts and the Rebbe's ongoing support and prayers for their success.
