On the eve of Pesach, the Rebbe explores whether life should focus on ease or on effort and accomplishment. He teaches that true satisfaction comes through personal toil, both for the individual and the Jewish people, culminating in redemption through our actions.

To the sons and daughters of Israel wherever they are—may Hashem be upon them and grant them life.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

Standing on the eve of Pesach, the festival marking the birth and beginning of the Jewish people, one is prompted to reflect: What should be the path of this nation’s life so it can reach its purpose and goal in the best and quickest way? This is a broad and multifaceted topic; here we will focus on one point: Should our people strive for a life with minimal effort and maximum satisfaction—or a life filled with toil and maximum accomplishment, a life of much doing and achieving?

This question also applies to each individual in their personal life. It is unnecessary to point out that this is not an abstract question; its answer forms the foundation for how a person approaches their life and responds to what happens to them and around them—even in matters not directly dependent on them—and certainly in matters directly connected to them.

At first glance, based on our faith and Torah—Torat Chayim (a living Torah) and Torat Emet (a true Torah)—that the Creator and Ruler of the world (and of "the small world," man) is Essence of Goodness itself (pure goodness), whose nature is to do good (Teva HaTov Leheitiv), it would seem logical that ultimate perfection would be receiving maximum pleasure—true pleasure—without any difficulties or suffering; then one would see Teva HaTov Leheitiv (the nature of good to do good) in its fullest measure. Nevertheless, Torah—which is light—says: Adam le'amal yulad (man was born for toil). Even Adam HaRishon before the sin of Etz HaDaas was placed in Gan Eden: le'ovdah u'leshomrah (to work it—the Garden—and guard it).

The explanation for this apparent contradiction is also given in Torah: Because Hashem wants a person to enjoy goodness in its completeness, human nature is such that true pleasure comes only when one becomes a partner in achievement through their own toil and hardship; conversely, if one receives it as a gift, it is actually degrading—it is called "nehama d'kisufa" (bread of shame). Therefore, complete pleasure comes specifically through toil—and the greater the toil, the sweeter are the fruits of achievement.

This was also true at the birth of our people. The process of Exodus from Egypt was as Hashem told Moshe Rabbeinu: "Behotzi'acha et ha'am miMitzrayim ta'avdun et haElokim al hahar hazeh" (When you bring out the people from Egypt you will serve G‑d on this mountain). Although Yetziat Mitzrayim itself was a gift from Heaven with wondrous open miracles, it was fundamentally tied to "ta'avdun" (serving like a servant) Elokim; this was Am Yisrael's merit—their participation in "behotzi'acha et ha'am miMitzrayim."

And just as this applies to all Israel collectively, so too for every individual. The individual's aspiration must be to act and accomplish—not just act but with toil that Torat Emet calls "amal." Only then does one rise from being Adam—afar min ha'adamah (dust from the earth)—to Adam—adameh laElyon (similar to Above), resembling Hashem.

The birth and life of an individual are also bound up with miracles. Even when everything appears natural, our Sages said: "Ein ba'al hanes makir b'niso"—a person does not recognize their own miracle. Therefore we thank Hashem three times daily "al nisecha sheb'chol yom imanu" (for Your miracles that are with us every day). As David Ne'im Zmiros Yisrael (and King of Israel) says on behalf of every Jew—and all Israel: "Mimei imi ata gozi... kemofes hayiti l'rabim... avo b'gevurot... v'ad henah agid niflotecha... techayeni." (From my mother's womb You drew me out—the Midrash says this refers also to all Israel: You took us out from Egypt's hand—a wonder I have been to many—the Midrash: how many miracles You have done for me—I will enter into years of strength... until now I will recount Your wonders—the Midrash: at every period, time, moment—You will revive me—the Midrash: bring me out from exile).

This means that a person's entire life—from birth onward—and that of Am Yisrael—is constantly miraculous even if not always visible until the miracle of true redemption for both individual Jews and all Israel. Through our deeds and service throughout exile—the daily toil of each individual and all together according to Hashem’s command—the ultimate perfection for all creation will be realized: true and complete redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu very soon when it will be fulfilled: "Kimei tzeitcha me'eretz Mitzrayim arenu niflaot" (As in the days when you left Egypt I will show you wonders).

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that both individuals and Am Yisrael achieve true fulfillment not through ease but by engaging deeply in purposeful effort. Our daily struggles transform into lasting satisfaction and bring about redemption—for ourselves and for all creation.
