Shalom u'Vrachah!

Our festivals—like all matters of Torah and mitzvos—have both general, shared elements and also unique, specific characteristics. The rich, inexhaustible content of the festivals allows us to select certain points that can serve as especially relevant lessons and guidance for particular circumstances at a given time and place. This is certainly true regarding Pesach—and even more so—considering that Pesach is the head of all festivals (the chief among all Yamim Tovim), and that the festival of the Exodus from Egypt is the birthday of the Jewish people.

The special importance of Pesach can also be seen from the fact that it is one of (no more than) two positive commandments for which the penalty for non-fulfillment is kareis (spiritual excision), G‑d forbid. These two mitzvos are: milah (circumcision) and Korban Pesach. Both are closely connected because one who is not circumcised cannot offer the Korban Pesach. Of these two, Pesach is stricter—for milah there is an obligation to perform it even after its appointed time has passed, but the Korban Pesach can only be offered at its specific time and not later. In one detail, however, Korban Pesach stands apart from all other mitzvos and offerings: not only must the father be circumcised, but his children must also be circumcised; if he has a son whom he did not circumcise—not bringing him into the eternal covenant with the Almighty—the father too cannot bring the Korban Pesach!

Although the concept of offerings—including Korban Pesach—is relevant only in the era of the Beis HaMikdash and will be renewed when it is rebuilt by Moshiach Tzidkeinu, it is well known that all matters in Torah—which is eternal—contain clear and practical guidance for daily life in all times and places.

The festival of Pesach—which takes its name from the Korban Pesach—highlights most strongly the importance of chinuch (Jewish education) for children. In fact, one of the main features of the entire Seder night is educating children—all children—as expressed in the Haggadah: "Kan ha-ben shoel" (Here the child asks), "K'neged arba banim dibrah Torah" (The Torah speaks about four sons), "V'higadeta l'vincha" (You shall tell your child), etc. Yet specifically regarding Korban Pesach it becomes strikingly clear how much Jewish education affects not only children but also parents: if parents have not fulfilled their duty to their child by bringing him into this eternal covenant with G‑d—in a way that leaves an imprint not just on his soul but also on his body ("v'haysa brisi bivsarchem l'bris olam"—and My covenant shall be in your flesh as an everlasting covenant)—then not only do they deprive their child of this bond with G‑d and its associated blessings (and those connected to Korban Pesach), but they themselves lose out on bringing this offering with all its associated blessings.

Especially relevant is remembering and awakening to "Pesach Hu LaHashem... U'Fasachti Aleichem" (It is a Passover offering to Hashem... And I will pass over you)—that G‑d has mercy on you; even when undesirable things happen in the world—whether materially or spiritually—they pass over you.

When Jews were in Egypt, offering the Korban Pesach protected them so that "the destroyer" (the plague) would not enter a Jewish home seeking victims—it was about protecting firstborns. In our times, when Jews everywhere are in exile—both physical exile and spiritual exile—some parents have unfortunately neglected this aspect of Korban Pesach as explained in Torah: "Mishchu u'kechu lachem tzon" (Draw forth or take for yourselves sheep)—which means: turn away from idolatry and attach yourselves to mitzvos (leave behind foreign gods/ideals and connect yourself to mitzvos). The destroyer finds an open door to such homes and seeks to lead astray—not distinguishing between firstborns or others, boys or girls. The plague has spread into many Jewish homes. This results partly because some parents themselves have not abandoned foreign (and hostile-to-true-Judaism) ideals; others who do fulfill "mishchu u'kechu" have nevertheless cast off their responsibility to ensure their children are raised from childhood along a path of true Judaism—the path of Torah and mitzvos. The sad and tragic consequences of such an approach are evident today—not only for neglected children but also for parents who neglected them.

The festival of Pesach—and especially Korban Pesach—reminds us emphatically that if Jews want themselves and their children to benefit from "U'Fasachti Aleichem" (I will pass over you) and generally from "Zman Cheiruseinu" (the season of our freedom)—to free themselves from all undesirable or harmful things, whether internal tendencies or even more so—from negative outside influences at a time when "the destroyer" roams even educational institutions—this protection can only be achieved if they themselves abandon all forms of idolatry/false ideals and attach themselves firmly to true Judaism; giving their children a thorough Torah-true education from early childhood—in a way that becomes engraved both in body and soul through daily observance of Torah and mitzvos in actual practice. Then one can hope—and be confident—that parents together with their children—all children—will sit together at the Seder table celebrating Pesach—the festival of our freedom—in every sense; this will also hasten true freedom—the complete redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu.

With blessings for a kosher and joyous Passover holiday—and true freedom,
Menachem Schneersohn

Summary

Pursuing authentic Jewish education for one's children ensures spiritual protection for both them and their parents; this commitment prepares families for redemption as symbolized by celebrating Pesach together.
