Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to the question regarding the idea and suggestion to arrange during the upcoming month of Tishrei a several-week trip for the boys who are orphans from the war in Eretz HaKodesh, as a continuation of their Bar Mitzvah celebration: This suggestion does not seem appropriate to me at all, for the following reasons:
a) The concept of Bar Mitzvah—when a boy becomes obligated in mitzvos—does not align with matters of trips (vacation and entertainment). On the contrary, one could say they are opposites; on this day the boy accepts upon himself the yoke of Heaven and the yoke of Torah and mitzvos. Of course, this acceptance should be done with true joy and a whole heart since he merits a special mission as a son and servant of our Father in Heaven, King of kings, Hakadosh Baruch Hu. It is also understood that despite this great joy—even though our Sages relate that Avraham Avinu—the first Ivri—made a great feast on Yitzchak Avinu's Bar Mitzvah day (Bereishis Rabbah 53:10; see also Zohar Chadash Bereishis 10:3; 15:4), nevertheless it is customary among Jews to recite Tachanun then, etc., because as stated above, the Bar Mitzvah day is not an occasion for ceasing work but rather for increasing work—Heavenly work—Torah and mitzvos.
b) Another point in this matter is that we are speaking about war orphans. It is not appropriate to send these orphans away from home for an extended period; doing so would only emphasize even more the sense of loneliness felt by their widowed mothers—and often by siblings as well. On the contrary: when the boy becomes an adult (in mitzvos), his obligation toward his mother and home increases—to do what he can to encourage their spirits and strengthen their trust in Hashem Who created and guides the world and watches over each individual with Divine Providence.
c) It is likely that many mothers and families would suppress their own feelings—the longing for their son who has traveled—in order for him to enjoy himself on this trip. But in my opinion, his enjoyment does not outweigh the increased loneliness felt by his mother and family. Furthermore—and this is essential—as stated above, Bar Mitzvah should strengthen his sense of responsibility now that he is obligated in mitzvos—not relieve him of it. All the more so he should not begin his adulthood with enjoyment at others' expense.
d) If all this applies throughout the year, how much more so during Tishrei—the month of holidays—when the absence of husband and father is felt most acutely. Special effort must be made to fill this void as much as possible. All those who care about this matter should do what they can so these families can celebrate holidays in an appropriate spirit—as instructed by our Torah of life.
e) An alternative suggestion—which also summarizes these main points—is to invite these Bar Mitzvah boys together with their mothers (etc.) to Kfar Chabad for some or all days of Tishrei's holidays and festivals—similar to what was arranged last Pesach and especially during times of joy.
f) The above does not contradict hosting Bar/Bat Mitzvah boys/girls at camp in Kfar Chabad since that is only for a short time and relatively close to home—with opportunities for visits, phone calls, etc.
Blessings for success and good news,
M. Schneersohn
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Bar Mitzvah marks spiritual responsibility rather than leisure; sensitivity toward family feelings—especially widowed mothers—is paramount. He encourages alternatives involving family participation during holidays instead of trips that may deepen loneliness.
