Shalom u'Vrachah!
To the sons and daughters of Israel in every place—may Hashem be upon you for life—abundant peace and blessing!
We are standing on the threshold of a Shemitah year (the seventh and sanctified year in the cycle)—the year 5726—which is coming upon us and all Israel for good. One of the central lessons of Shemitah is indicated in the Torah's order of verses and words expressing its concept: Ki Tavo'u El HaAretz... Veshavta HaAretz Shabbat LaHashem. Shesh Shanim Tizra Sadecha, etc. (When you come into the land... the land shall rest a Sabbath to G‑d. Six years you may sow your field, etc.).
At first glance, this order is puzzling: first come six years of working the fields, then only afterward comes Shemitah—the seventh year of rest. So in Torah it should have said first "Six years you shall sow your field," etc., and only then "the land shall rest." However—the order in Torah is also Torah (instruction). This mentioned order regarding Shemitah teaches us how our approach to life should be: when one comes into a land and must settle into life—and it is unavoidable to engage in "earth-work"—one must know that the first and most important thing, in thought and as a goal, is "Shabbat LaHashem": not the earthly and material but the spiritual and holy.
This approach will ensure that one does not sink into earthly and material matters. Moreover—by always keeping this thought before one's eyes—the six weekday-like gray years become different; they lose much of their mundaneness and become brighter and more meaningful. Furthermore—the change and elevation of these six years also elevate the seventh year so that instead of just "Veshavta... Shabbat LaHashem," it becomes "Shabbat Shabbaton... Shabbat LaHashem."
The same applies in daily life: there is "earth-work" (livelihood) and weekday matters in general—such as eating, drinking, etc.—all those things where man has no advantage over an animal (Kohelet 3:19). And there is also "Veshavta HaAretz"—breaking away from earthliness—and "Shabbat LaHashem"—engaging in matters of holiness and G‑dliness: shining times like prayer, Torah study, and mitzvah observance.
The lesson from Shemitah is that one must begin daily life with this thought and approach: even though later one will have to do weekday things, their main point and purpose is "Shabbat LaHashem." Then even weekday matters will be brighter and more meaningful, while matters of holiness will also be elevated to a higher level. This is the way to achieve a full and harmonious life.
Standing at the threshold of a Shemitah year, may Hashem help that each person begins this year with this mentioned approach: that the main thing and goal in life is not material but specifically spiritual; that materiality can only be justified when it is permeated with the thought of "Veshavta HaAretz Shabbat LaHashem"—when materiality serves and satisfies higher aspirations for holiness and G‑dliness.
Then all days of the year—and all actions each day—will reflect man's advantage over an animal (Kohelet 3:19), confirming that he was created B'Tzalmenu Kidmusenu (in G‑dly form) and lives accordingly; times during the year which are on the level of "Shabbat" will then be elevated further to "Shabbat Shabbaton." Then certainly also fulfilled will be G‑d's blessing for Shemitah—Vetzivisi Es Birchasi Lachem (I will command My blessing for you)—in a supernatural manner.
The most fitting day in the year for a firm and true resolution about all this—a lasting resolution—is Rosh Hashanah: The day Adam HaRishon was created B'Tzalmenu Kidmusenu (in G‑dly image), ruled over all creation (beings) and elevated them to recognition of Nishtachaveh V'Nikreh Lifnei Hashem Osenu (complete submission to G‑d our Maker); it is also when we ask: Meloch Al Kol HaOlam Kulo Bichvodecha... Veyomar Kol Asher Nishama BeApo Hashem Elokei Yisrael Melech U'Malchuso B'chol Mashalah (Spread Your kingship over all creation through Your glory... let everyone who breathes recognize that Hashem Elokei Yisrael is King, His kingdom rules everything).
With blessings for being inscribed and sealed for a good sweet year—in children, life, abundant sustenance.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that by making spirituality our primary focus—even amid daily work—we uplift both mundane activities and holy moments alike. This mindset brings harmony to our lives, especially as we enter a new year seeking meaning beyond material pursuits.
