Mr. Gershon Zept.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
As we approach the new year, the year of Shemitah, which is coming upon us and all Israel for good, I am sending you—and all your friends and those influenced by you—my blessing: a blessing for being inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, both materially and spiritually together.
With blessing.
P.S. My strong hope is that since your letter from the beginning of the summer, there has been progress in the institution where you serve as educational guide and director—both spiritual progress and material progress, which is also needed. For very often spiritual advancement depends on this, especially attracting good students. This is particularly so according to what is explained in Chassidus about the essential difference between the two directives: Kol Ma'asecha L'Shem Shamayim ("All your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven") and B'chol Derachecha Da'eihu ("In all your ways know Him"). The first means that the deed is only a preparation for something holy; higher still is B'chol Derachecha Da'eihu—where the deed itself becomes holy. And since it says 'in all your ways know Him,' certainly every material matter can be made holy by a person, even if it originally belongs to the realm of the permissible. This also relates to my general letter for Rosh Hashanah attached here; I hope it will interest you and those connected with you and that you will use it appropriately. As explained: see Sefer HaMaamarim Melukat vol. II p. 79 and what is referenced in note 24.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that both spiritual and material efforts are vital in education; by dedicating even mundane actions to holiness, one elevates them. The new year is an opportunity to strengthen both aspects for personal growth and communal influence.
