Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 18th of Nissan, in which you write about a shidduch matter and omit the main point in your letter according to the instructions of our Torah, the Torah of Life: The main thing is as it is written, "A woman who fears the L‑rd, she shall be praised," meaning the state of the woman in Judaism and mitzvot as they pertain to daily life in practice. After all, the conduct of the home—and to a significant degree even that of the husband—depends on the attitude of the homemaker, i.e., the woman, towards these matters. It is also understood that one should not make a shidduch or marriage an issue for education or attempt to change the woman and her outlook; these are two separate matters and should not be mixed. It is also unclear from your letter whether you gave her clear assurances regarding these points or if you have not yet spoken about them decisively.
Since it appears from your letter that you are not entirely objective in this matter—which is understandable—it would be appropriate for you to ask your friends to clarify what I wrote at the beginning of this letter; that is, regarding the religiosity of the woman in question, and see how to proceed.
May it be G‑d's will—Who watches over each individual with Divine Providence—that He guide you well in all these matters. It is understood that every matter requires Heavenly assistance and G‑d's blessing. The measure of the Holy One blessed be He is measure for measure but many times over. Therefore, it is most appropriate that you use this time while you are still in your current environment to spread Judaism and its matters there. In accordance with our Sages' instruction: "Action is paramount," meaning fulfillment of practical mitzvot. By increasing G‑d's blessings upon those influenced by you (by bringing their hearts closer to our Father in Heaven), G‑d's blessings will increase for you as well.
It is advisable that you have your tefillin checked (if this has not been done within the past twelve months), and also that every weekday before putting on tefillin you set aside a few coins for tzedakah.
With blessing for good news in all mentioned above,
In the name of my revered teacher and master shlita,
Secretary
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that when considering a shidduch, one must prioritize genuine religious commitment over attempts at changing another’s outlook. Practical mitzvah observance brings increased blessings both personally and for those one influences.
