To the sons and daughters of Israel in every place — may Hashem be upon them and grant them life.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
One of the main aspects of Rosh Hashanah—as has been emphasized many times—is that it is the time of the coronation (crowning) of the Supreme One, the King of Israel (King of the Jews) and King of the world (King of the universe). This is connected with our deep prayer and inner request: "Meloch al ha'olam kulo"—be King over the entire world! Such a prayer means a complete readiness to place oneself in a state aligned with this Divine coronation. That is: to entirely submit oneself and dedicate oneself to the King, until one's very being and everything one has belongs only to the King. This is the concept of kabbalas ol malchuso yisbarach—accepting upon oneself the yoke of Divine kingship, which expresses itself in all details of daily life.
In truth, every day must have—and does have—the concept of kabbalas ol malchus Shamayim, especially when we recite Krias Shema. But there is a fundamental difference: every day, kabbalas ol is just the beginning and underlying foundation for one's conduct throughout that day—that all his affairs should be built on kabbalas ol. However, Rosh Hashanah is when kabbalas ol malchuso is itself the theme and content of the day; it becomes revealed and permeates one's entire being so that he becomes completely nullified to G‑dliness. For this acceptance to be complete and genuine, a person must first make a cheshbon tzedek (a true accounting) regarding his conduct until now—with a deep feeling of regret and teshuvah for those things that were not proper. And true teshuvah washes away what was not good and makes him beloved and cherished—close and dear (beloved by Hashem)—and distinguished as a relative and friend. He becomes worthy, and it is certain that Hashem will accept his coronation and fulfill his request for "Meloch al ha'olam kulo."
Every era and every place has its own special advantages as well as unique difficulties. In our era there prevails in various circles a drive for independence—not only materially but also ideologically: an urge not to submit to established order or recognize things before fully understanding them with one's own intellect, etc. Seemingly this poses an obstacle to kabbalas ol. Especially in countries that are still (relatively) young and were built on foundations—and through—personal initiative and energy; where this spirit characterizes both personal and societal attitudes toward life—it becomes even harder to fit into frameworks of kabbalas ol.
Nevertheless, we have a general principle: Hashem does not demand from a person things beyond his abilities. Since kabbalas ol malchuso yisbarach is the inner content of Rosh Hashanah (and indeed forms the basis for all deeds throughout an entire year), valid for all times and places—it is certain that even in our times and these mentioned countries it is possible—and necessary—to attain complete kabbalas ol malchuso.
In truth there is also a special advantage here—specifically in our time and these countries: A person who isn't exclusively oriented toward independence—sometimes so, sometimes otherwise—when he accepts something out of kabbalas ol it doesn't become so deeply rooted within him because it's not new for him to feel regret or change his stance. By contrast, someone unaccustomed to submission who is independent in his thinking—when he comes to realize he must recognize a higher authority—it penetrates him more deeply; he finds strength to transform himself completely—and permanently. This expresses itself not only in feeling or understanding but also in thought, speech, and action—even down to the smallest detail.
On the contrary: since most hours are filled with actions or words, kabbalas ol malchuso mainly expresses itself through speech and deed—in fulfilling practical mitzvos—in all details of daily conduct. Simultaneously this brings one to fulfill more seriously—and energetically—the mitzvah "Ve'ahavta l'reiacha kamocha" (love your fellow as yourself), especially regarding acceptance of His kingship: influencing another Jew—or many Jews—to accept His kingship so that for them too it doesn't remain only intellectual or emotional but also finds expression in thought, speech, action—in daily life.
May it be His will that our acceptance of His kingship immediately bring about "kabel b'rachamim u'veratzon es tefilaseinu" (accept our prayers with mercy and goodwill), and may Avinu Malkeinu grant each individual among all Israel a good sweet year in every respect—with visible good—from His full open holy wide hand.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Rosh Hashanah centers on accepting G‑d's sovereignty through sincere self-nullification expressed practically in daily life—even amidst modern drives for independence—and encourages us to inspire others likewise while seeking true teshuvah.
