Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 9th of MarCheshvan, in which you write about how you became acquainted with the Chabad movement back in Holland, and regarding your current place of study—how it is sometimes difficult for you to see the improper attitude toward mitzvos from those who have learned more than you.
My strong hope—based on what our Sages of blessed memory taught us that action is the main thing—is that this feeling of yours, your distress at seeing this attitude, will come to the attention of those about whom you write in a way that will influence them to change their approach. We have been assured that words which come from the heart enter the heart and have their effect.
This is especially true when these words are accompanied by a living example from your own daily life—a life of Torah and mitzvos. There is nothing that stands in the way of willpower; if everywhere the mitzvah of "VeAhavta LeReiacha Kamocha" (love your fellow as yourself), which is a great principle in Torah, applies—to show others who are mistaken or confused the path of Torah and mitzvah—how much more so in a land where "the eyes of Hashem your G‑d are upon it from the beginning of the year to its end," and especially for those studying in an institution for guides and educators who will influence many students.
It is well known that in order to influence students in a certain area, it is essential that the influencer possess this quality to a very great degree themselves.
I hope you saw my general letter for Rosh Hashanah published in Eretz HaKodesh in Lashon HaKodesh, one of whose central points is how even a single individual can accomplish great and wondrous things in matters of good if only he utilizes all his abilities properly.
You surely know about the daily study cycles of Chitas (Chumash, Tehillim, Tanya), which are suitable for everyone, and observe them every day.
Blessings for success and good news.
In the name of the Lubavitcher Rebbe shlita,
Secretary
P.S. Since here we write in Lashon HaKodesh, English, and Yiddish, please let us know which language to use when writing to you in the future.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that heartfelt words combined with personal example can positively influence others' observance. Especially for educators, embodying Torah values deeply enables them to inspire students effectively through Ahavas Yisrael and daily practice.
