Establishing Married Life with Torah Study and Joyful Acceptance

The Rebbe writes that when a husband dedicates part of his day to Torah study, it is the proper foundation for married life. Both spouses should agree to this lifestyle joyfully, accepting its material limitations, so their home is built on Torah and happiness.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

The order of life, when the husband dedicates part of his day (at least) to Torah study, is clearly the correct beginning and should be the way among Bnei Yisrael (since marriage is the start of an everlasting building). However, it is also understood that this involves some limitation and reduction regarding material matters. Since this is felt in daily life, yet life as Bnei Yisrael must be—as it is written—with joy, goodness of heart, and trust, there must be agreement to such a way of life from the outset—full agreement and with joy (for they are beginning their lives with a life of Torah, a Torah of life).

If both agree to this in the above manner—may it be G‑d's will that all this be with goodness and blessing.

Summary

Building a Jewish home on daily Torah study requires both spouses' joyful acceptance—even if it means some material limitation—so their marriage begins with unity, purpose, and blessing.
