Laws of Sanctifying the Month, Chapter 12

1. The mean movement of the sun in one day, which is twenty-four hours, is nine degrees, fifty parts, and eight seconds—its sign is 9° 50' 8". Thus, its movement in ten days is nine degrees, fifty-one parts, and twenty-three seconds—its sign is 9° 51' 23". Its movement in one hundred days is eighty-nine degrees, thirty-three parts, and fifty-three seconds—its sign is 89° 33' 53". The remainder of its movement in one thousand days, after subtracting every three hundred and sixty degrees as explained, is two hundred sixty-five degrees, thirty-eight parts, and fifty seconds—its sign is 265° 38' 50". The remainder of its movement in ten thousand days is one hundred thirty-six degrees, twenty-eight parts, and twenty seconds—its sign is 136° 28' 20". In this manner, you may multiply and determine its movement for any number you wish; and similarly, if you wish to make known signs for its movement for two days, three, four, up to ten—you may do so. Likewise, if you wish to have known and prepared signs for its movement for twenty days, thirty, forty, up to one hundred—you may do so; and this is a clear and known matter, once you know the movement for one day. It is fitting for you to have prepared and known the mean movement of the sun for twenty-nine days, and for three hundred and fifty-four days, which are the days of a lunar year when its months are in order—this is called a regular year: for when you have these mean values prepared, the calculation for the sighting of the moon will be easy for you, since there are exactly twenty-nine days from the night of the sighting to the night of the sighting of the next month; and so in every month, there are not less than twenty-nine days and not more, for our concern in all these calculations is only to know the sighting. Similarly, from the night of the sighting of this month to the night of the sighting for that month in the following year, it is a regular year or a year and one day; and so in every year. The mean movement of the sun for twenty-nine days is twenty-eight degrees, thirty-five parts, and one second—its sign is 28° 35' 1". Its movement for a regular year is three hundred forty-eight degrees, fifty-five parts, and fifteen seconds—its sign is 348° 55' 15".

2. There is a single point in the sun’s sphere, and likewise in the spheres of the other seven stars, that when the star is at that point, it is at its highest above the earth; and that point in the sphere of the sun and the other stars, except for the moon, revolves uniformly, and its movement is, in approximately seventy years, one degree. This point is called the "apex." The movement of the sun’s apex in ten days is one and a half seconds, which is thirty thirds; its movement in one hundred days is fifteen seconds; its movement in one thousand days is two parts and thirty seconds; and its movement in ten thousand days is twenty-five parts. Its movement in twenty-nine days is four seconds; and its movement in a regular year is fifty-three seconds.

Laws of Sanctifying the New Month, Chapter 12

1. We have already stated that the main starting point for this calculation is from the beginning of the night of Thursday, which is the third day of the month of Nissan in the year 4938 from Creation. The position of the sun in its mean course at this principal point was seven degrees, three parts, and thirty-two seconds from the constellation Aries—its sign is 7, 3, 32. The position of the sun’s height at this principal point was twenty-six degrees, forty-five parts, and eight seconds from the constellation Gemini—its sign is 26, 45, 8. Whenever you wish to know the position of the sun in its mean course at any time you desire, take the number of days from the beginning of the principal day until the day you wish, and calculate the mean movement of the sun for those days from the signs we have indicated; add everything to the principal point, and combine each type with its own. The result is the position of the sun in its mean course for that day.

2. How is this done? If we want to know the mean position of the sun at the beginning of the night of Shabbos, which is the fourteenth day of the month of Tammuz of this year, which is the year of the principal point, we find the number of days from the principal day until the beginning of this day for which we want to know the sun’s position: one hundred days. We take the mean movement for one hundred days, which is 98, 33, 53, and add it to the principal point, which is 7, 3, 32. The calculation yields one hundred and five degrees, thirty-seven parts, and twenty-five seconds—its sign is 105, 37, 25. Thus, its position in the mean course at the beginning of this night is in the constellation Cancer, at fifteen degrees and thirty-seven parts from the sixteenth degree.

3. The mean position that results from this calculation will sometimes be at the beginning of the night exactly, or an hour before sunset, or an hour after sunset. This is not a concern in the calculation of the sun for the purpose of observation, since we complete this approximation when we calculate the mean position of the moon.

4. In this manner you should always proceed for any time you wish, even after a thousand years: gather all the remainder and add it to the principal point, and you will obtain the mean position. The same applies to the mean position of the moon, and to the mean position of every star, once you know its daily movement and the principal point from which to begin; gather its movement for all the years and days you wish and add it to the principal point, and you will obtain its mean position. Similarly, for the sun’s height: add its movement for those days or years to the principal point, and you will obtain the position of the sun’s height for the day you desire.

5. Likewise, if you wish to establish a different principal point from which to begin, other than the one we began with in this year, so that this principal point will be at the beginning of a known cycle year or at the beginning of a century, you are permitted to do so. If you wish the principal point to begin from years that preceded this principal point, or after several years from this principal point, the method is known.

6. What is the method? You already know the sun’s movement for a regular year, its movement for twenty-nine days, and its movement for one day. It is known that a year whose months are all full is one day longer than the regular year; a year whose months are all deficient is one day shorter than the regular year. A leap year, if its months are in their regular order, will be thirty days longer than the regular year; if its months are all full, it will be thirty-one days longer than the regular year; if its months are all deficient, it will be twenty-nine days longer than the regular year.

7. Since all these matters are known, you can calculate the mean movement of the sun for all the years and days you wish, and add it to the principal point we have established—this will yield its mean position for any day you desire from future years, and you can make that day the principal point. Or, you can subtract the mean movement you have calculated from the principal point we have established, and this will yield the principal point for any day you desire from previous years, and you can make that mean position the principal point. You should do the same for the mean position of the moon and the other stars, if you know them.

8. It has already been clarified from all that we have said that just as you can know the mean position of the sun for any day you wish from future days, so too you can know its mean position for any day you wish from past days.
