C. The Concept of the Lot—Based on the Teaching, "In What Was Your Father Especially Careful?"
In our Torah portion, it is related that the Land of Israel was divided by lot. The significance of a lot is that it transcends reason and understanding. Accordingly, every person has a particular matter that is uniquely his portion.
This is similar to the teaching, "In what matter was your father especially careful?" Although he was careful in observing the entire Torah, there was nevertheless one particular area in which he exercised exceptional care. That specific area was the one most closely connected to him, and through it he would attain elevation in all his other spiritual endeavors.
If a person encounters obstacles and resistance in that particular area, the opposite is true of what one might assume: the very fact that the evil inclination wages its strongest battle against him there is itself an indication that this matter is the one most deeply connected to his soul and mission.
