Likkutei Sichos vol 2 – Pinchas 2 –Awakening Holy Zeal Through the Inner Torah

In times of spiritual crisis, one should not wait for legal permission to act. By studying the inner dimension of Torah and speaking from the heart, holy zeal awakens souls, halts spiritual decline, and hastens redemption.

B. The law is that there are matters regarding which "the law exists, but it is not taught as practical instruction"; rather, "zealots may act." For "a person does not commit a transgression unless a spirit of folly enters him." However, when one is aroused with zeal for G‑d, the body and the animal soul become nullified and no longer create confusion. The Divine soul is then able to align itself with the Supreme Will.

Just as in the episode of Baal Peor, there was a plague, so too today there is a spiritual plague. Therefore, at such a time, one should not go to a rabbinical court to ask whether he may interrupt his Torah study in order to save the children of Israel. Rather, he must ignite the zeal within his own soul through the study of the inner dimension of Torah. He should then speak to fellow Jews not through intellectual debate, but with heartfelt emotion. In this way he kindles the "flames, mighty flames of fire" within another person's soul. Through this, the plague is halted, and we merit the revelation of "Pinchas—this is Elijah," who heralds the future Redemption.

The concept of the lot (goral): Similar to the teaching, "In what matter was your father especially careful?"
