The Torah portion Matos-Masei begins with the words 'These are the journeys of the children of Israel.' The Rebbe explores why the Torah describes their travel through the desert, emphasizing that these were not just physical movements but spiritual advancements. Every location they encamped at was integral to their spiritual growth.
The Rebbe states that each journey represented a stage in refining and elevating themselves and their surroundings. The purpose was to transform the world into a dwelling for Hashem, accomplished through fulfilling mitzvot and studying Torah.
Moreover, these journeys prefiguratively teach us about our spiritual service today. Every person experiences their own 'journeys', facing challenges and opportunities for growth. We must recognize that all situations we encounter play a role in our divine purpose.
In particular, the Rebbe highlights that their travels began in 'Mitzrayim'—a place associated with constraints and limitations—and concluded as they approached Eretz Yisrael. This reflects our task is to overcome constraints and reach personal redemption by adhering to divine commandments.
The Rebbe concludes by encouraging us to learn from these narratives, stressing how every moment in life contributes towards achieving our ultimate mission: revealing G-dliness in every aspect of creation, thereby bringing about true redemption.
