Likkutei Sichos Vol. 2 – Shelach 1 – Moshe’s Selfless Leadership and Love for the Jewish People

This class explores how Moshe Rabbeinu’s profound love for the Jewish people shaped his leadership, as he consistently advocated for them before Hashem. The Rebbe teaches that true leaders must emulate Moshe’s self-sacrifice, prioritizing their community’s spiritual and physical wellbeing.

The Rebbe begins by discussing the great love Moshe Rabbeinu had for the Jewish people. This love was so profound that even when they sinned, Moshe would intercede on their behalf with Hashem, demonstrating his dedication as a true leader.

He explains that Moshe is referred to as the 'faithful shepherd' not only because he led them physically, but also because he nurtured their souls and spiritual needs. This is evident from passages in the Torah where Moshe argues in favor of the Jewish people, emphasizing their virtues and potential for repentance.

Furthermore, the Rebbe elaborates on how this quality of self-sacrifice is essential for any leader. A leader must put aside personal interests and focus entirely on the wellbeing of his followers, just as Moshe did throughout his life.

This dedication extended even to times when punishment was decreed upon the people. Moshe would plead with Hashem, showcasing his unyielding commitment to protect and uplift his nation.

The Rebbe draws a parallel between Moshe’s leadership and that required of future leaders within Bnei Yisrael. He stresses that leaders must emulate these attributes in standing up for and guiding their communities towards righteousness.

The sicha concludes by reiterating how every Jew can learn from Moshe's selfless example: to act with love and compassion in one’s personal connections and community responsibilities.
