Chana - Gittel was a woman who corresponded with the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, seeking his guidance and blessings regarding concerns about her son's development. Her letter reflects a personal and familial connection to the chassidic tradition, as well as a desire for spiritual counsel.
In a letter dated 27 Nissan 5712 (1952), the Rebbe responds to Chana - Gittel's inquiry about her son, who was not developing as expected. The Rebbe expresses pleasure that she remembers her distinguished ancestry, specifically mentioning her grandfather and father, both renowned in the chassidic world. He encourages her to let this remembrance inspire the spiritual atmosphere of her home, suggesting that such conduct brings continued blessings from Hashem Yisborach for herself, her husband, and her children.
The Rebbe addresses her specific concern by emphasizing the importance of identifying the root cause of any issue before offering advice. He gently asks whether her son was "born in purity," clarifying if the Jewish customs of mikvah and taharah were observed at the time. The Rebbe assures her that upon receiving her honest response, he will provide further guidance. Meanwhile, he promises to mention her son for a blessing at the holy resting place of his father-in-law, the previous Rebbe, and requests the names of her husband and daughter to include them as well.
Additionally, the Rebbe advises practical steps: to check the mezuzot in her home for kashrut, ensure her son sleeps with a yarmulke and wears a tallit katan, and that only kosher food is consumed. The tone of the letter is caring and supportive, blending spiritual encouragement with practical guidance.
