Rabbi Moshe Warhaftig (Philadelphia Jewish Community Leader)

Rabbi Moshe Warhaftig was a rabbinic leader and communal activist associated with the Jewish community in Philadelphia. He was recognized for his involvement in supporting Torah education and Jewish communal life, particularly within the local camp or community referenced in correspondence from the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

Correspondence with the Rebbe

The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, addressed Rabbi Moshe Warhaftig in a letter dated 10 Kislev, 5712 (1951), expressing appreciation for his ongoing communal work and support of Torah and Judaism in Philadelphia. The Rebbe noted that he regularly received positive reports regarding Rabbi Warhaftig's activities from visitors traveling between their communities.

The central theme of the Rebbe's letter was the urgent need to address the chinuch (Jewish education) of the younger generation in Philadelphia. The Rebbe conveyed concern, based on reports he had received, that the youth were increasingly distancing themselves from Torah observance and mitzvot, with the risk that only a select few would remain committed unless extraordinary efforts were made. Citing the teaching of the Sages that "they only urge those who are already eager," the Rebbe encouraged Rabbi Warhaftig to intensify his efforts in the field of education, emphasizing the critical importance of saving Jewish boys and girls from spiritual decline.

The Rebbe also referenced a saying of his father-in-law, the previous Rebbe, that "outreach never returns empty-handed," and expressed confidence in Rabbi Warhaftig's dedication. He requested to be informed of any practical steps taken and extended blessings for success in these endeavors. The letter was sent along with educational materials for dissemination within the community.
