Shmuel Kozlovsky (Torah Educator and Community Activist)

Shmuel Kozlovsky is a correspondent of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, who wrote to the Rebbe describing the general situation in his city and his personal circumstances, particularly in relation to his work in education and his upcoming marriage. The Rebbe’s response to him addresses both communal and personal spiritual guidance.

Correspondence with the Rebbe

The Rebbe’s letter to Shmuel Kozlovsky (dated 5 Kislev, 5712) acknowledges a long-awaited update from Kozlovsky, in which he describes the state of his city and his own situation. The Rebbe expresses hope that Kozlovsky’s circle of acquaintances has grown, enabling him to draw more people closer to their Father in Heaven and to spread the light of mitzvah, Torah, and especially the teachings of Chassidus.

The Rebbe shares a teaching from his father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe, about the importance of spreading light beyond one’s own home—likening it to placing a lantern in the street, which not only illuminates but also attracts people even in the darkest times. The Rebbe encourages Kozlovsky to serve as such a beacon in his community, emphasizing that the power of good is especially strong in times of darkness.

Addressing Kozlovsky’s concern about reducing his fixed Torah study due to wedding preparations, the Rebbe firmly discourages this, insisting that Torah study is the channel for blessing and success, and is even more crucial as preparation for marriage. He advises that while the duration of study sessions may be shortened due to practical constraints, the regularity and commitment to Torah learning should not be abandoned. The Rebbe draws on teachings from the Talmud and Chassidus to underscore the unique spiritual necessity of maintaining diverse areas of Torah study.

Guidance and Blessings

The Rebbe assures Kozlovsky that he will mention those listed in Kozlovsky’s letter at the resting place of the Previous Rebbe, praying for their needs. He extends blessings for success in Kozlovsky’s educational work, his personal matters, and for a successful and auspicious wedding, expressing hope that Kozlovsky will build a home founded on Torah and mitzvot as illuminated by Chassidus. The Rebbe also encloses booklets and a general letter for the 19th of Kislev, encouraging Kozlovsky to share them with others and further spread their teachings.
