Avraham Mordechai Shmuel Lider was an individual engaged in Torah education, specifically teaching children of Yemenite background. He corresponded with the Lubavitcher Rebbe regarding matters of Torah study and educational practice.
In a letter dated 6 Tishrei, 5715 (1954), the Rebbe responded to Avraham Mordechai Shmuel Lider’s inquiry about the proper approach to teaching pronunciation in Torah study, given that his class consisted of Yemenite children. Lider described his practice of teaching the vowel and letters separately, following the guidance of the Chabad Rebbeim, and sought advice about pronunciation customs for his students.
The Rebbe affirmed the importance of maintaining the traditional Sephardic pronunciation, emphasizing that since Sephardic Jews have preserved this custom for generations, there is no need to change it. The Rebbe noted that reciting Chasidus with the Sephardic pronunciation, inherited from their ancestors who were devoted to G-d’s name, brings spiritual pleasure above and has a positive effect below. The Rebbe also expressed pleasure at Lider’s participation in both revealed Torah (Nigleh) and Chasidic teachings (Chasidus), encouraging him to increase his efforts in the coming year, in accordance with the teaching of the Sages that “whoever increases is given more.”
