Yosef Chaim Shlomo is addressed in the correspondence of the Lubavitcher Rebbe as a respected member of the Chassidic community, recognized by honorific titles. The letter reveals his involvement in family and communal matters, as well as his engagement with questions of Jewish law and Chassidic practice.
The Rebbe's letter to Yosef Chaim Shlomo, dated 12 Nissan 5711 (1951), responds to news of his granddaughter's wedding. The Rebbe extends heartfelt blessings, wishing that the young couple build their home upon the foundations of Torah and mitzvah as elucidated in Chassidus. He further blesses the family with much nachas—both materially and spiritually—and includes wishes for a kosher and joyous Pesach. The Rebbe also encloses a gift certificate as a present in honor of the occasion.
In addition to these blessings, the Rebbe addresses halachic and Chassidic queries posed by Yosef Chaim Shlomo. The first question concerns whether there is an instruction from the Tzemach Tzedek regarding wearing a watch on Shabbos. The Rebbe responds that he is not aware of any such directive in the Tzemach Tzedek's printed works, though he allows for the possibility of an oral tradition. The second question relates to the concept of Shabbos "blessing" the preceding days. The Rebbe explains this in the context of the sanctity of Shabbos beginning before its onset, referencing sources such as Mishnas Chassidim and Shaar HaKavanos in Pri Etz Chaim, and notes the practice regarding the omission of "Vayehi Noam" when Yom Tov falls during the week, as discussed in the Siddur Yaavetz.
