Kohanov - Eliyahu Shmuel

כהנוב - אליהו שמואל

Eliyahu Shmuel Kohanov (Chassidic Scholar and Shochet)

Eliyahu Shmuel Kohanov is addressed in the correspondence as a respected Chassid, scholar, and ritual slaughterer (shochet). The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, wrote to him on the occasion of his wife's passing, offering words of consolation and spiritual reflection.

Correspondence with the Rebbe

The Rebbe's letter to Eliyahu Shmuel Kohanov is a letter of condolence, sent upon hearing of the passing of Kohanov's wife. The Rebbe expresses personal sorrow at the news and extends the traditional blessing: "May the Omnipresent comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem." The tone is compassionate and empathetic, reflecting the Rebbe's deep concern for the well-being of his correspondent.

In his message, the Rebbe draws upon the significance of the date—Yud-Beis–Yud-Gimmel Tammuz, the days commemorating the redemption of the Previous Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn. He explains that days of such spiritual joy and redemption are times when "all matters of judgment and constricted consciousness are nullified," and that sorrow should not persist in the presence of such G-dly joy. The Rebbe encourages Kohanov to find comfort and hope in the merit and spiritual light of these special days, assuring him that the pain of loss will be eased by the joy and redemption they represent.
