B"H, Motzaei Shabbos Kodesh, 18 Elul, 5730.
Brooklyn, NY.
To the sons and daughters of Israel in every place—may Hashem be upon you for life.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
The month of Elul, the conclusion of the year, is—as is well known—a time for soul-accounting regarding the past year and a time to prepare for the new year that is coming upon us and all Israel for good and blessing. For this reason—so that the preparation will be proper—there must first be an accounting of the past. Of course, it must be a true accounting: what was done incorrectly, what was left undone, and what was accomplished—with a firm resolve to correct what needs fixing, to complete what was left undone—utilizing all strengths and possibilities—and to ascend to a higher level compared to the previous year; to go from strength to strength in all matters of goodness and holiness.
The necessity of making a true accounting when transitioning from one year to another is evident from the fact that several opportunities are given for this at the year's end:—the month of Elul itself;—the twelve days from 18 Elul until Rosh Hashanah which correspond to the months of the year—a day per month—to rectify each month;—Rosh Hashanah itself, whose special mitzvah is blowing the shofar. The hint and meaning of shofar blowing is—as our great teacher Rambam teaches us—to awaken Jews to soul-accounting;—the Ten Days of Teshuvah in general, especially the seven days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur which correspond to the seven days of the week: Sunday among these seven days rectifies (according to this calculation) all Sundays of the year; Monday—all Mondays; etc.; until reaching its peak on Yom HaKadosh (the holy day), Yom Kippur.
As mentioned above, soul-accounting must lead to a true assessment of all one's actions—both those done properly and those neglected. However, a person is personally involved in his own affairs; he is subjective when judging himself and may never make a mistake. One's own intellect gets involved—the feeling of self-love—which creates a tendency toward an inaccurate assessment. Moreover: human intellect—which is limited—is not always reliable in judging what is good or otherwise. Therefore Hashem—the Creator of the world and man Who knows human limitations and difficulties—gave us the Torah (called Torah Or) to illuminate our path in life. When a Jew accepts Torah and mitzvos with kabbolas ol (without mixing in human intellect), he thereby unites with G‑dly intellect from Torah Or, making things clear as to what he should or should not do. This is the meaning of "Hashem Ori" (G‑d is my light) at the beginning of Psalm 27 which we begin reciting twice daily from Rosh Chodesh Elul.
But even when one knows clearly what is good or not good—it isn't always easy to actually do what is right in full measure, especially when it requires action against one's own (limited) intellect or strong will or desire. There are—or it appears there are—various difficulties and tests; therefore every Jew—even a tzaddik—asks each morning at day's start: "Al tevieinu lidei nisayon..." (Do not bring us into trial...). Here too Hashem helps if one firmly resolves to withstand temptation. This is also expressed by "...veyishi" (G‑d is my salvation), following "Hashem Ori" in that verse.
The transition from one year to another isn't just a calendar event: another year has passed. The intention and purpose are to have more goodness and holiness—to rise higher so that there will be an increase in matters of Torah and mitzvos ever more so. For no matter how good things were before—even for great people or tzaddikim—it isn't good enough if one remains stationary; rather one must strive always upward—from strength to strength—even higher still. In this too we must turn again to Hashem—that He help by giving needed strength so that today's deeds surpass yesterday's—and tomorrow's surpass today's. This is also expressed by "...Hashem ma'oz chayai" (G‑d is the strength of my life)—the continuation in that verse.
May Hashem help that coming from this luminous day—the birthday of "the two great luminaries," giants among Israel in their generations as well as future generations—the Baal Shem Tov (founder of general Chassidus) and the Alter Rebbe (author of Tanya & Shulchan Aruch)—who devoted their lives to strengthening love of Hashem, love of Torah, love of Israel (which includes even a stranger whom one has never met—that even toward him Ahavas Yisrael should be as toward oneself)—that everyone act accordingly both for their own benefit and others', ever-increasingly so; this will arouse G‑d's attribute (measure-for-measure but far greater—in His full open holy broad hand), fulfilling literally "Hashem Ori veyishi... Hashem ma'oz chayai," accomplishing everything with expansiveness, joy, gladness—and hastening fulfillment of G‑d's promise (as continued in that Psalm): "to behold Hashem's pleasantness...and offer sacrifices with joyous song"—in the Beis HaMikdash rebuilt on its place by King from David's line—Moshiach Tzidkeinu with our true complete redemption soon indeed.
With honor and blessings for being inscribed & sealed for a good sweet year materially & spiritually together as one,
Menachem Schneersohn
Summary
This letter teaches us that Elul calls for honest self-examination guided by Torah light—not just personal judgment—and urges us toward ever-increasing growth in goodness through Divine assistance as we prepare ourselves spiritually for Rosh Hashanah and beyond.
