דער חודש אלול איז אַ ספּעציעלער חודש צווישן אַלע חדשים פון יאָר דורכדעם וואָס ער איז
דער
חודש פון חשבון הנפש פאַר דעם פאַרגאַנגענעם יאָר, און צוגרייטונג צום נייעם יאָר.
דער אינהאַלט פון דעם חודש דריקט זיך אויס אויך אין דעם וואָס
פון
ראש חודש אלול הויבט מען אָן צו זאָגן קאַפּ' כ"ז פון תהלים:
לדוד ה' אורי וישעי גו' מעוז חיי
– "דער אויבערשטער איז מיין ליכטיקייט און מיין רעטונג . . די שטאַרקייט פון מיין לעבן".
די דערקלערונג פון די דריי דערמאָנטע באַגריפן – ליכטיקייט, רעטונג, שטאַרקייט – איז:
אַ מענטש האָט דאָך פאַר זיך צוויי וועגן אין לעבן, דער וועג פון טוב און דער וועג פון דאָס פאַרקערטע, און דאַרף אויסקלייבן צווישן זיי. מוז ער דעריבער אָנקומען צום אויבערשטן צו
באַלייכטן
דעם ריכטיגן וועג.
אין דעם וועג זיינען אָבער פאַראַן שטרויכלונגען און שוועריקייטן; דעריבער דאַרף מען אויך אָנקומען צום אויבערשטן'ס הילף און

To all participants in the annual dinner of Yeshivas Achei Temimim in Newark, may Hashem be upon them and grant them life. Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to the news about the upcoming event—the annual dinner of the yeshiva—on the coming 22nd of Elul: The month of Elul is a special month among all months of the year because it is a time for self-accounting regarding the past year and preparation for the new year.
The essence of this month is also expressed in that from Rosh Chodesh Elul we begin to say Psalm 27: 'LeDavid Hashem Ori V'Yishi...' (Hashem is my light and my salvation...), 'Ma'oz Chayai' (the strength of my life). The explanation of these three concepts—light, salvation, strength—is as follows: A person has two paths in life—the path of good and its opposite—and must choose between them. Therefore, he must turn to Hashem to illuminate the correct path.
On this path there are obstacles and difficulties; thus one must also turn to Hashem for help and salvation to avoid stumbling blocks and overcome challenges. And since completeness requires that one go on this good path from strength to strength and progress in all good things—from good to better, from joy and vitality to even greater joy and vitality—one must first turn to Hashem as 'the strength of my life.'
In light of these thoughts about Elul and in the spirit of this month as explained above, I hope that this annual undertaking will be carried out with great success—to help strengthen and expand the yeshiva's educational activities; an education pure in holiness, based on the approach of Elul—to educate students toward true completeness on these three foundations: Hashem Ori (my light), Yishi (my salvation), Ma'oz Chayai (the strength of my life).
With greetings to the administration of the yeshiva, its distinguished guests, all participants and friends who have the great merit to support the yeshiva so it may flourish and grow and produce good fruits—with honor and blessing for success, good tidings, and for being inscribed and sealed for a good year.

The Rebbe teaches that Elul is a time for reflection and preparation through seeking G‑d's guidance. He encourages supporting Torah education rooted in holiness so students can achieve true completeness in light, salvation, and strength.
