*              *              *

*              *              *

To the sons and daughters of Israel in every place—may Hashem be upon them and grant them life.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

Every matter in Torah, even a detail—and certainly a detail of such a fundamental concept as the Exodus from Egypt—has special significance and unique directives. The Torah tells us that before the Jews left Egypt, Hashem gave them various mitzvos: some to be fulfilled while still in Egypt; others to be fulfilled later. Among the mitzvos commanded in Egypt is one that stands out because it was designated as a special sign—a symbol and reminder—of the entire concept of the Exodus from Egypt, and it was meant to serve as such not only at a specific time of year but on all weekdays throughout the year: this is the mitzvah of tefillin. From this it is understood that the connection between the mitzvah of tefillin and the Exodus from Egypt is very broad and deep. Even compared to Pesach with all its details—which are only during Pesach—the remembrance and reliving of the Exodus must be daily, and this is marked as "l'ot al yadecha u'lzicharon bein einecha" (as a sign on your hand and as a remembrance between your eyes)—in tefillin (on all weekdays throughout the year).

Like all matters of Torah and mitzvos, the special significance of tefillin has multiple explanations, and I wish to focus here on one of them. The concept of the Exodus from Egypt was liberation from enslavement—beginning with its simple meaning: physical forced labor (avodat parech), up to its deepest meaning: spiritual liberation—freedom from Mitzrayim (limitations and boundaries)—from all constraints that restrict the soul; until the very essence of a Jew is revealed, both as an individual and as a people. The essence of a Jew is—as Hashem says: "Banim atem laHashem Elokeichem" (You are children to Hashem your G‑d). This refers not only to the soul before it descends into this world but also to a Jew as he exists in this world—a soul with a body and all their characteristics.

The concept of "banim laMakom"—G‑d's children—means above all that just as Hashem is ruler over the world and everything in it, so too must a Jew—in all matters connected with his Jewish identity—be sovereign over worldly matters; not only on festive occasions but also in daily life. This must be actualized—in practice and openly. That is, not only should a Jew not be affected or influenced by the world around him; on the contrary, he should rule—in everything related to Judaism—over all worldly matters.

This immediately raises a simple yet powerful question: How can this be demanded from every Jew? And how can he achieve it? The answer is also simple: Since he is G‑d's child, Hashem gives him special G‑dly and supernatural powers—for we see even in the analogy of children and parents that children naturally inherit traits from their parents, who pass these on to their children. In our case—as Jews are "banim laMakom"—this occurs on an even deeper level. As explained by the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch: In the analogy of parents and children, children are their own entity but closely connected with their parents; whereas in our case—as Jews are G‑d's children—they are always (and through Torah and mitzvos also openly) not an independent entity but completely nullified before Hashem—their entire being is to fulfill His will—as both servant and child. The Exodus also brought out and revealed "ki li bnei Yisrael avadim avadai hem asher hotzeiti otam me'eretz Mitzrayim" (For unto Me are Bnei Yisrael servants; they are My servants whom I brought out from Egypt). When a Jew brings out these G‑dly powers fully until they permeate his entire being—not just his actions but also his speech and thought—it gives him the ability to rule over all aspects of his surrounding world.

This is also the concept behind tefillin as explained in many places—and most clearly concentrated in Shulchan Aruch: When a Jew puts on tefillin he must have in mind that Hashem commanded us to put tefillin on our hand opposite our heart, and on our head opposite our mind so that we remember miracles He did for us...and that He has power and sovereignty to do whatever He wishes above and below according to His will (so we remember miracles He did for us...and that He has power and sovereignty over upper and lower worlds). And we should subjugate like a servant before Hashem—the soul which is in one's mind—and also one's desires and thoughts of heart—to serve Him; since mind (intellect) and heart (emotion) direct all actions, speech, thoughts. Then indeed—"eved melech k'melech" (the king's servant has power like the king); thus through being both servant and child of the King one actually fulfills "koach u'memshalah la'asot ba'elyonim u'vatachtonim kirtzono" (power/sovereignty above/below according to His will)—beyond all limitations: true Exodus from Egypt.

May Hashem grant that by fulfilling this aspect of Exodus during Pesach—and throughout every day of the year as mentioned—we merit true complete redemption from current exile—exile both physical body/exile of soul—with kindness/compassion—in repentance/tranquility through Moshiach Tzidkeinu speedily now.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that putting on tefillin daily connects us deeply with spiritual liberation—the essence of leaving personal limitations behind—and empowers each Jew with G‑dly strength for mastery over worldly challenges every single day.
