The Commandment to Separate Maaser from the Produce of the Land
This letter discusses the mitzvah to separate maaser (tithe) from produce grown in the Land of Israel, as commanded in the Torah. The maaser is given to the Leviim, and its laws are detailed in Tractate Maasros. This obligation applies only in Eretz Yisrael.
המצווה הקכ"ז
הציווי שנצטווינו להפריש מעשר מצמח הארץ.
והוא אמרו יתעלה: "כי את מעשר בני ישראל אשר ירימו לה' תרומה" (במדבר יח, כד).
וכבר באר הכתוב, שהמעשר הזה ללויים.
וכבר נתבארנו דיני מצווה זו במסכת מעשרות.
וזהו הנקרא: מעשר ראשון, ואינו חובה מן התורה אלא בארץ ישראל.
