Shoshan HaKohen served as the Av Beis Din (head of the rabbinical court) of the Jewish community in Djerba. He was recognized for his leadership, dedication to communal needs, and his role in upholding Torah observance and Jewish tradition within his community.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, corresponded with Shoshan HaKohen in a letter dated the 6th of Cheshvan, 5715 (1954). In this letter, the Rebbe addressed Shoshan HaKohen with great respect, acknowledging his position as Av Beis Din and his energetic involvement in communal affairs. The Rebbe expressed regret for the delay in his response due to the Tishrei holidays and his heavy workload.
The Rebbe was informed by Binyamin Eliyahu about the situation in Djerba and the community's needs. He shared that efforts were underway to find a suitable individual to help establish a Beis Midrash for Rabbanim (a study hall for rabbis) in Djerba, with the help of G-d. Demonstrating practical support, the Rebbe arranged for a one-time financial contribution of fifty thousand francs from his fund to assist the community. He expressed a desire to do even more, but noted the limitations of available resources.
The Rebbe concluded with blessings and encouragement, hoping to hear good news about the continued safeguarding of sacred traditions, the spread of Torah with pure fear of Heaven, and the fulfillment of mitzvos in practice. He invoked Divine assistance for Shoshan HaKohen and his community in their holy work.
