Laws of Sanctifying the New Moon, Chapter 17

1. All the matters we have introduced are so that you will be prepared and ready to know how to determine the sighting. When you wish to know this, you should begin and calculate, and determine the true position of the sun, the true position of the moon, and the position of the lunar node at the time of the sighting. Subtract the true position of the sun from the true position of the moon; the remainder is called the first elongation.

2. After you know the position of the lunar node and the position of the moon, you will know the latitude of the moon, and whether it is northern or southern; this is called the first latitude. Be careful with this first elongation and first latitude, and have both of them prepared before you.

3. Consider this first elongation: if you find it to be nine degrees exactly or less, you should know with certainty that it is impossible for the moon to be seen that night anywhere in Eretz Yisroel, and you do not need any further calculation. If the first elongation is more than fifteen degrees, you should know with certainty that the moon will be seen throughout Eretz Yisroel, and you do not need any further calculation. If the first elongation is from nine degrees up to fifteen, you will need to inquire and investigate with the calculations of the sighting, until you know whether it will be seen or not.

4. In what case are these words said? When the true position of the moon is from the beginning of the sign of Capricorn until the end of the sign of Gemini. But if the position of the moon is from the beginning of the sign of Cancer until the end of the sign of Sagittarius, and the first elongation is ten degrees exactly or less, you should know that the moon will not be seen at all that night anywhere in Eretz Yisroel. If the first elongation is more than twenty-four degrees, it will certainly be seen throughout the borders of Yisroel. If the first elongation is from ten degrees up to twenty-four, you will need to inquire and investigate with the calculations of the sighting, until you know whether it will be seen or not.

5. These are the calculations of the sighting: Consider and see in which sign the moon is. If it is in Aries, subtract fifty-nine parts from the first elongation; if it is in Taurus, subtract one degree from the elongation; if it is in Gemini, subtract fifty-eight parts from the elongation; if it is in Cancer, subtract fifty-two parts from the elongation; if it is in Leo, subtract forty-three parts from the elongation; if it is in Virgo, subtract thirty-seven parts from the elongation; if it is in Libra, subtract forty-three parts from the elongation; if it is in Scorpio, subtract forty-three parts from the elongation; if it is in Sagittarius, subtract thirty-six parts from the elongation; if it is in Capricorn, subtract forty-four parts from the elongation; if it is in Aquarius, subtract fifty-three parts from the elongation; if it is in Pisces, subtract fifty-eight parts from the elongation. What remains from the elongation after you subtract these parts is called the second elongation.

6. Why do we subtract these parts? Because the true position of the moon is not the position in which it will be seen; rather, there is a difference between them in elongation and latitude, and this is called the change of appearance. The change of appearance in elongation at the time of sighting is always subtracted from the elongation, as we have said.

7. But the change of appearance in latitude: if the latitude of the moon is northern, subtract the parts for the change of appearance in latitude from the first latitude; if the latitude of the moon is southern, add the parts for the change of appearance in latitude to the first latitude. The latitude that results after you add or subtract these parts is called the second latitude.

Laws of Sanctifying the New Moon, Chapter 17

8. And how many parts are added or subtracted? If the moon is in the constellation of Aries, nine parts; if it is in Taurus, ten parts; if it is in Gemini, sixteen parts; if it is in Cancer, twenty-seven parts; if it is in Leo, thirty-eight parts; if it is in Virgo, forty-four parts; if it is in Libra, forty-six parts; if it is in Scorpio, forty-five parts; if it is in Sagittarius, forty-four parts; if it is in Capricorn, thirty-six parts; if it is in Aquarius, twenty-seven parts; if it is in Pisces, twelve parts.

9. And after you know these parts, subtract them from the first latitude or add them to it, as we have informed you; and you will obtain the second latitude. And you already know whether it is north or south, and you will know how many degrees and how many parts this second latitude is; and prepare it before you, and it will be ready.

10. Afterwards, you return and take a portion from this second width, because the moon deviates slightly in its orbit. How much is the portion that you take from it? If the position of the moon is from the beginning of the constellation Aries until twenty degrees into it, or from the beginning of the constellation Libra until twenty degrees into it, you take from the second width two-fifths of it. If the moon is from twenty degrees in Aries until ten degrees in Taurus, or from twenty degrees in Libra until ten degrees in Scorpio, you take from the second width one-third of it. If the moon is from ten degrees in Taurus until twenty degrees in it, or from ten degrees in Scorpio until twenty degrees in it, you take from the second width one-fourth of it. If the moon is from twenty degrees in Taurus until its end, or from twenty degrees in Scorpio until its end, you take from the second width one-fifth of it. If the moon is from the beginning of Gemini until ten degrees into it, or from the beginning of Sagittarius until ten degrees into it, you take from the second width one-sixth of it. If the moon is from ten degrees in Gemini until twenty degrees in it, or from ten degrees in Sagittarius until twenty degrees in it, you take from the second width half of one-sixth of it. If the position of the moon is from twenty degrees in Gemini until twenty-five degrees in it, or from twenty degrees in Sagittarius until twenty-five degrees in it, you take from the second width one-fourth of one-sixth of it. If the position of the moon is from twenty-five degrees in Gemini until five degrees in Cancer, or from twenty-five degrees in Sagittarius until five degrees in Capricorn, you do not take anything, because there is no deviation of the orbit here. If the moon is from five degrees in Cancer until ten degrees in it, or from five degrees in Capricorn until ten degrees in it, you take from the second width one-fourth of one-sixth of it. If the position of the moon is from ten degrees in Cancer until twenty degrees in it, or from ten degrees in Capricorn until twenty degrees in it, you take from the second width half of one-sixth of it. If the position of the moon is from twenty degrees in Cancer until its end, or from twenty degrees in Capricorn until its end, you take from the second width one-sixth of it. If the moon is from the beginning of Leo until ten degrees into it, or from the beginning of Aquarius until ten degrees into it, you take from the second width one-fifth of it. If the moon is from ten degrees in Leo until twenty degrees in it, or from ten degrees in Aquarius until twenty degrees in it, you take from the second width one-fourth of it. If the moon is from twenty degrees in Leo until ten degrees in Virgo, or from twenty degrees in Aquarius until ten degrees in Pisces, you take from the second width one-third of it. If the moon is from ten degrees in Virgo until its end, or from ten degrees in Pisces until its end, you take from the second width two-fifths of it. And this portion that you take from the second width is what is called the orbit of the moon.

11. Afterwards, return and consider the latitude of the moon, and see whether it is to the north or to the south. If it is to the north, subtract this arc of the moon from the second length; and if the latitude of the moon is to the south, add this arc to the second length. In what case does this apply? When the position of the moon is from the beginning of the sign Capricorn until the end of the sign Gemini. But if the moon is from the beginning of the sign Cancer until the end of the sign Sagittarius, the matter is reversed: if the latitude of the moon is to the north, add the arc to the second length; and if the latitude of the moon is to the south, subtract the arc from the second length. The result of the second length after you add to it or subtract from it is called the third length. And know that if there is no deviation of the arc, and the calculation does not require taking anything from the second latitude, then the second length itself is the third length, with no addition or subtraction.

12. Afterwards, return and look at this third length, which is the number of degrees between the moon and the sun, and determine in which sign it is. If it is in the sign Pisces or Aries, add to the third length one-sixth of it; and if the length is in the sign Aquarius or Taurus, add to the third length one-fifth of it; and if the length is in the sign Capricorn or Gemini, add to the third length one-sixth of it; and if the length is in the sign Sagittarius or Cancer, leave the third length as it is, and do not add to it or subtract from it; and if the length is in the sign Scorpio or Leo, subtract from the third length one-fifth of it; and if it is in the sign Libra or Virgo, subtract from the third length one-third of it. The result of the third length after you add to it, subtract from it, or leave it as it is, is called the fourth length. Afterwards, return to the original latitude of the moon, and always take two-thirds of it—this is called the elevation portion of the region. Consider and see: if the latitude of the moon is to the north, add the elevation portion of the region to the fourth length; and if the latitude of the moon is to the south, subtract the elevation portion of the region from the fourth length. The result of the fourth length after you subtract from it or add to it is called the arc of visibility.

How to Determine Whether the Moon Will Be Seen on a Given Night

13. How is this done? For example, if we want to investigate whether the moon will be visible on the night of the second Shabbos evening of the month of Iyar in this year or not, you should determine the true position of the sun, the true position of the moon, and the latitude of the moon for that hour, as we have explained. You will find the true position of the sun to be seven degrees and nine parts in the constellation of Taurus—its sign is 7 9. The true position of the moon will be eighteen degrees and thirty-six parts in the constellation of Taurus—its sign is 18 36. The latitude of the moon will be three degrees and fifty-three parts to the south—its sign is 3 53, and this is the first latitude. Subtract the position of the sun from the position of the moon; the remainder is eleven degrees and twenty-seven parts—its sign is 11 27, and this is the first elongation. Since the moon was in Taurus, there will be a change in the appearance of the elongation by one degree, and it is proper to subtract this from the first elongation. The result is the second elongation: ten degrees and twenty-seven parts—its sign is 10 27. Similarly, there will be a change in the appearance of the latitude by ten parts, and since the latitude of the moon was to the south, it is proper to add this change in appearance, which is ten parts, to it. The result is the second latitude: four degrees and three parts—its sign is 4 3. Since the moon was eighteen degrees in Taurus, it is proper to take a quarter of the second latitude, which is called the moon’s arc. The result is the moon’s arc for this time: one degree and one part, since we do not calculate seconds.

14. Since the latitude of the moon is to the south, and the true position of the moon is between the head of Capricorn and the head of Cancer, it is proper to add the arc to the second elongation. The result is the third elongation: eleven degrees and twenty-eight parts—its sign is 11 28. Since this elongation is in Taurus, it is proper to add a fifth of the third elongation to it, which is two degrees and eighteen parts. The result is the fourth elongation: thirteen degrees and forty-six parts—its sign is 13 46. We then return to the first latitude and take two-thirds of it; the result is the elevation of the region, which is two degrees and thirty-five parts. Since the latitude was to the south, it is proper to subtract the elevation of the region from the fourth elongation. The remainder is eleven degrees and eleven parts—its sign is 11 11. This is the arc of visibility for this night. In this manner, you should calculate and determine the arc of visibility—how many degrees and how many parts it contains—for any night of possible sighting you wish, always.

15. After you have determined this arc, understand the following: If the arc of visibility is nine degrees or less, it is impossible for the moon to be seen anywhere in Eretz Yisroel. If the arc of visibility is more than fourteen degrees, it is impossible for it not to be seen and it will be visible throughout all of Eretz Yisroel.

16. If the arc of visibility is from the beginning of the tenth degree until the end of the fourteenth degree, compare the arc of visibility to the first elongation, and you will know whether the moon will be seen or not, based on the limits it has. These are called the limits of visibility.

17. These are the limits of visibility: If the arc of visibility is more than nine degrees up to the end of ten degrees, or more than ten, and the first elongation is thirteen degrees or more, it will certainly be seen. If the arc is less than this, or the elongation is less than this, it will not be seen.

18. If the arc of visibility is more than ten degrees up to the end of eleven degrees, or more than eleven, and the first elongation is twelve degrees or more, it will certainly be seen. If the arc is less than this, or the elongation is less than this, it will not be seen.

Laws of Sanctifying the New Moon, Chapter 17

19. If the arc of visibility is more than eleven degrees up to the end of twelve degrees, or more than twelve, and the first elongation is eleven degrees or more—then it will certainly be visible. But if the arc is less than this, or the elongation is less than this—it will not be visible.

20. If the arc of visibility is more than twelve degrees up to the end of thirteen degrees, or more than thirteen, and the first elongation is ten degrees or more—then it will certainly be visible. But if the arc is less than this, or the elongation is less than this—it will not be visible.

21. If the arc of visibility is more than thirteen degrees up to the end of fourteen degrees, or more than fourteen, and the first elongation is nine degrees or more—then it will certainly be visible. But if the arc is less than this, or the elongation is less than this—it will not be visible. Up to here is the end of the limits.

22. How is this? We come to consider the arc of visibility for the night of the second Shabbos eve of the month of Iyar of this year. The calculation of the arc of visibility comes out to eleven degrees and eleven chalakim, as you have learned. And since the arc of visibility was between ten and fourteen, we compared it to its first elongation. And you already know that the elongation on this night was eleven degrees and twenty-seven chalakim. And since the arc of visibility was more than eleven degrees, and the first elongation was more than eleven, it is known that it will certainly be visible on this night, according to the established limits. And so you should do with every arc and its first elongation.

23. You have already seen from these calculations how many computations there are in this, and how many additions, and how many subtractions—after we have toiled greatly, until we found close methods that do not require great depth: for the moon, there are great complexities in its orbits. Therefore, the sages said, "The sun knows its coming" (Tehillim 104:19), but the moon does not know its coming. And the sages said, sometimes it comes in a long path, sometimes in a short one—as you see from these calculations, that sometimes you add and sometimes you subtract, until the arc of visibility results; and sometimes the arc of visibility is long and sometimes short, as we have explained.

24. The reason for all these calculations, and why this number is added, and why it is subtracted, and how each matter is known, and the proof for each matter—this is the science of the seasons and geometry, in which the sages of Greece composed many books, and these are now found in the hands of the sages. But the books composed by the sages of Israel who lived in the days of the prophets, from the tribe of Yissachar, have not reached us. But since all these matters are established by clear observations, in which there is no flaw, and it is impossible for a person to question them—we do not concern ourselves with the author, whether they were composed by prophets or by non-Jews: for anything whose reason has been revealed, and whose truth is known by flawless observations—we do not rely on the person who said it or who taught it, but on the proof that has been revealed and the reason that has become known.
