Rabbi Yosef Chaim Shlomo Schneersohn is addressed in the correspondence of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, as a distinguished Chabad Chassid. The Rebbe’s letter to him reflects both personal warmth and scholarly engagement, responding to family milestones and halachic inquiries.
The Rebbe’s letter, dated 12 Nissan 5711 (1951), responds to Rabbi Yosef Chaim Shlomo Schneersohn’s notification of his granddaughter’s wedding. The Rebbe extends heartfelt blessings of mazal tov, expressing wishes that the young couple build their home upon the foundations of Torah and mitzvot as elucidated in Chassidus. He further blesses the family to experience much nachas—both materially and spiritually—from the new couple. The Rebbe also encloses a gift certificate as a present in honor of the occasion, highlighting his personal connection and care.
In addition to his blessings, the Rebbe addresses two halachic questions posed by Rabbi Yosef Chaim Shlomo Schneersohn:
a) Regarding whether there is an instruction from the Tzemach Tzedek about wearing a watch on Shabbos, the Rebbe responds that he has not heard of such a directive and is unaware of any mention in the printed works of the Tzemach Tzedek. He suggests that if such a tradition exists, it may be an oral one.
b) On the question of how Shabbos can “bless” the days preceding it, the Rebbe explains that the sanctity of Shabbos begins, in certain respects, from Erev Shabbos and sometimes even before midday. He references Mishnas Chassidim (tractate Yom Revi'i, chapter 3, mishnah 2), Shaar HaKavanos in Pri Etz Chaim, and the Siddur Yaavetz for further study, particularly regarding the omission of “Vayehi Noam” when Yom Tov falls during the week.
The tone of the correspondence is both warm and scholarly, reflecting the Rebbe’s dual role as a spiritual leader and halachic authority, and his personal regard for Rabbi Yosef Chaim Shlomo Schneersohn and his family.
