Students of Torah Institutions (Collective Address to Torah Scholars)

Students of Torah Institutions refers collectively to the young men and women enrolled in yeshivot and other Torah educational establishments. In his correspondence, the Lubavitcher Rebbe addresses them as a unified group, offering guidance and blessings at the outset of the academic year.

Correspondence with the Rebbe

The Rebbe’s letter to the students of Torah institutions, dated 5 Elul 5711 (1951), conveys warm greetings and heartfelt blessings as they begin a new term of study. The Rebbe invokes the blessing that He Who grants wisdom, understanding, and knowledge should shine His face upon the students, granting them success throughout the school year in every detail.

He emphasizes that every action undertaken by the sons and daughters of Israel should be imbued with proper intention and a desirable purpose. The Rebbe notes that even the recent vacation period served a higher purpose: to renew strength and add vigor, enabling students to continue—or for newcomers, to begin—their Torah study and education in fear of Heaven with increased diligence and vitality.

The Rebbe expresses hope and prayer that the students will actualize the diligence, persistence, and vitality necessary for acquiring Torah, which he describes as a “Torah of life, from the living G-d, an inheritance for the people of Israel.” He cites the verse, “And you who cling to Hashem your G-d are all alive today,” underscoring the spiritual vitality that comes from Torah study.

The Month of Elul and Self-Reflection

In the context of the month of Elul, the Rebbe highlights its special significance as “the month of accounting,” a term used by his revered father-in-law, the previous Rebbe. He encourages the students to make an honest reckoning of the past year, to identify areas for improvement in conduct and order, and to make good resolutions for the future. The Rebbe expresses strong confidence that the students will take this opportunity to ensure that their learning and behavior will be elevated for their benefit, both materially and spiritually.

The letter concludes with the Rebbe’s blessing for a good and sweet year, extended to each student, their parents, educators, and the administrators of their institutions.
