משניות לאבל וליארצייט
Mishnayos for a Mourner and on a Yahrzeit
The word Mishnah (משנה) has the same letters as neshamah (נשמה), soul. It is customary to study Mishnayos in the merit of a departed loved one, choosing chapters that begin with the letters of his or her Hebrew name, followed by the letters of the word נשמה (נ, ש, מ, ה).
Chabad custom (Sefer HaMinhagim): during the eleven months of mourning and on the yahrzeit, Keilim chapter 24 and Mikvaos chapter 7 are learned after Shacharis, Mincha and Maariv. Only the last Mishnah (Mikvaos 7:7) is said aloud, followed by Kaddish D'Rabanan. At Shacharis it is said after the daily Tehillim.
