Spiritual Healing and Compassion for Those Struggling

The Rebbe writes that just as one cannot blame a feverish patient for their symptoms, so too with someone whose spiritual warmth is misdirected. The approach must be to find a fitting remedy with compassion, guiding them gently toward healing rather than reproach.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your two letters from the 25th of Shevat, as well as the previous ones.

After all that you write about... shiy', it is similar to the case where it is difficult to complain to a sick person about why their temperature is not normal, because this is the very nature of their illness. The solution is to find a remedy and bring it to them since due to the fever they cannot leave their four cubits, and then to seek advice and methods appropriate for the patient's condition so that the remedy will be internalized and effective.

It is understood that this also applies when one of Bnei Yisrael's Divine soul's warmth has been replaced by warmth for the opposite side. At such a time, it is impossible to argue with them—as our Sages say: "A person does not sin unless a spirit of folly enters him"—and therefore he is not receptive to rational proof. In such cases, the solution is to find a remedy suitable for him (which has already been discussed in books of Mussar and especially in Chassidus).

Considering that one result of his illness is that he does not leave the four cubits of the "old and foolish king," there is no other choice—because of Ahavas Yisrael—but to bring the remedy into his domain and seek advice so it will penetrate internally. Then it will certainly be effective, for if a little light dispels much darkness, how much more so does much light! And if there is no other way, then one does not reveal to the patient that the intention is to cure his illness; he may think he is being given treats according to his current senses—and the analogy is clear. For your level, surely no explanation is needed.

It follows from all the above that those who receive from this patient deserve great compassion indeed; but they will not be saved by leaving their mashpia in his current state...

May Hashem grant you merit and success to be a messenger of good news in all the above. Thanks in advance.

Blessings.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that when someone struggles spiritually, we must respond with compassion and tailored guidance rather than criticism—just as we would care for someone physically ill—so that healing can reach them from within.
