...Regarding your comment on what was written in the English Hanukkah booklet, where the term Suria is used while in the words of our Sages the phrase is 'Malchus Yavan', it is known that earlier sources are not required to specify their statements, whereas those who come after must clarify their words in detail to avoid mistakes. Since the term 'Malchus Yavan' includes several countries and several kingdoms that emerged from the kingdom of Yavan of Alexander the Great (and specifically, the country of Yavan is on the European peninsula and not in Suria which is in Asia), therefore, to prevent readers from making a mistake, they chose a more precise term.
As for why in the wording of prayer they established the name Yavan, there are several intentions behind this. The most straightforward seems to be that the war was conducted under the banner of Greek culture, its teachings and customs. Additionally, since from the end of the exile of Media and Persia until the beginning of Edom’s exile (Rome), all persecutions and exiles during this interval are called by our Sages 'the exile of Yavan', and this too can be explained as above.
Regarding your note about the town name Kroshta, this is a copyist’s error; it should be Krotche (as mentioned in Igros Avos HaChassidim printed in HaTamim).
Enclosed is what was published regarding our bright day—our redemption and soul’s liberation—which is last Yud-Tes Kislev. Its content applies all year long; I hope it will interest you.
Blessings for proper success in good and visible ways together.
Summary
The Rebbe explains that later sources clarify terms like 'Yavan' to prevent misunderstanding, especially when historical or geographic distinctions matter. He also emphasizes careful attention to accuracy when referencing places or traditions.
