Megilat Esther Chapter_006 - פרק ו - The Turning Point: Honor in the Night

A restless night leads King Achashverosh to discover Mordechai’s unrewarded loyalty. In a move of supreme irony, the King tasks Haman—who had come to request Mordechai’s execution—with parading his arch-enemy through Shushan in royal garb. Haman returns home defeated and mourning, only to be rushed to his final confrontation at Esther’s second banq

Megillas Esther: Chapter 6 (Translation & Commentary)

The King’s Sleepless Night

6:1 On that night, the king’s sleep was disturbed. He ordered the book of chronicles—the records of remembrance—to be brought and read before him.

Rashi: His sleep was disturbed by a miracle. Some say he was troubled by Esther’s invitation to Haman; he suspected they were plotting against him and wondered why no "friends" had warned him. He concluded that perhaps he had failed to reward someone for a past favor, leading his subjects to stop caring about his safety. He opened the records to find an unrequited debt.

6:2-3 It was found written that Mordechai had reported the plot of Bigthan and Teresh to poison the king. The king asked, "What honor or greatness was done for Mordechai for this?" The servants replied, "Nothing was done for him."

Rashi: This event likely took place in the seventh year of his reign. The "servants" here are the same type of advisors who suggested the search for a new queen after Vashti’s death.

Haman’s Ironical Advice

6:4-5 The king asked, "Who is in the court?" Haman had just arrived in the outer court to petition the king to hang Mordechai on the gallows he had prepared. The servants informed the king that Haman was standing there, and the king said, "Let him enter."

6:6-9 Haman entered, and the king asked, "What should be done for a man whom the king wishes to honor?" Haman, thinking the king meant him, suggested: "Bring the royal raiment the king has worn, the horse the king has ridden, and place the royal crown on his head. Let a noble prince dress him and parade him through the city square, proclaiming, 'So shall be done to the man whom the king wishes to honor!'"

Rashi: Note that in verse 9, Haman omits the mention of the crown. He likely noticed the king’s face change with jealousy at the mention of someone else wearing the royal crown, so he quickly pivoted away from that detail.

The Great Reversal

6:10-11 The king said to Haman, "Hurry! Take the raiment and the horse and do exactly as you have spoken for Mordechai the Jew who sits at the king's gate. Let nothing fail of all you have suggested." Haman took the garments and the horse, dressed Mordechai, and paraded him through the city.

6:12 Mordechai returned to the king's gate, while Haman rushed home, mourning and with his head covered.

Rashi: Mordechai returned immediately to his sackcloth and fasting. Haman was "mourning" because of a tragic mistake: his daughter, thinking Mordechai was the one leading the horse and Haman was the one being honored, dumped trash on her father’s head. When she realized it was her father, she fell to her death.

The Beginning of the Fall

6:13 Haman recounted everything to his wife Zeresh and his wise men. They replied, "If Mordechai is of the seed of the Jews, before whom you have begun to fall, you will not prevail, but will surely fall before him."

Rashi: Zeresh compared the Jewish nation to the stars and the dust. When they descend, they go as low as the dust; but when they begin to ascend, they rise all the way to the stars. Since Haman’s fall had begun, it would be total.

6:14 While they were still speaking, the king’s chamberlains arrived and hurried Haman to the banquet Esther had prepared.

Summary

Chapter 6 represents the "Reversal" (V'nahafoch Hu) in its purest form. Haman enters the palace to take Mordechai’s life but leaves being forced to give him the highest honor. The King’s insomnia, fueled by the suspicion Esther planted, becomes the vehicle for Mordechai’s recognition. By the end of the chapter, Haman’s own advisors recognize that the tide has turned—the Jews are ascending to the stars, and Haman’s fate is sealed.
