Holy letters of the Rebbe, volume 17, letter number 6172. Baruch Hashem, the 15th of Nissan, 5718. Addressed to Rabbi Yaakov Yosef Gorkov in London. Shalom u’vracha. The Rebbe says, “I am responding to your letter of the 3rd of Nissan.” And the Rebbe says, “Regarding what you write about this young man, it is good that you are educating him slowly, step by step.” In other words, sometimes one must be patient and not overburden a person, but rather proceed gradually. This approach is already stated regarding the conquest of Eretz Yisroel, which also teaches us about the spiritual conquest of the land, as the verse says, “Little by little you will drive them out.”
The Rebbe notes that you did not mention whether he understands Yiddish. If he does, then certainly you can give him printed materials, such as the Tanya in Yiddish, and also some of the talks that are available in Yiddish. Perhaps this will assist him in his situation.
The Rebbe emphasizes that one should provide him with appropriate material and proceed with patience. It is understood that matters which are highly doubtful, and almost certain that he will not listen to them, should not be presented to him or demanded of him. If you burden him with expectations that he will not fulfill, it may negatively affect even those things that he is currently doing. Therefore, one must avoid instructing him in areas where compliance is unlikely, so as not to weaken his progress in other areas. By proceeding gradually, he will at least maintain and build upon what he is already doing.
The Rebbe also notes that the young man has a talent in electrical work. It would therefore be appropriate to help him find a livelihood in that field, for the reasons you mentioned and for additional reasons as well.
As we approach the Festival of Matzos, the time of our freedom, which comes upon us and all of Israel for good, the Rebbe expresses his blessing for a kosher and happy festival, and for true freedom—freedom both from material worries and from spiritual concerns, and from anything that might hinder the service of Hashem with joy and gladness of heart. One should draw from this freedom and joy for the entire year.
The Rebbe adds that in the service of Hashem, as instructed in our Torah, the living Torah, it encompasses all aspects of a person’s life, throughout the entire day and throughout one’s lifetime, as it says, “In all your ways, know Him.” Since one must always be serving Hashem, it follows that one must always serve with joy. Therefore, true service requires a state of joy at all times.
The Rebbe concludes with blessings for the festival and for good news. Thus, the Rebbe instructs Rabbi Gorkov to guide the young man patiently and gradually, to avoid overwhelming him with demands he cannot meet, to support him practically by helping him find suitable work, and to emphasize a life of continuous joyful service of Hashem, accompanied by true freedom from all worries.
Summary – The Rebbe teaches that lasting growth comes through patience and sensitivity, building step by step while supporting both spiritual and material needs, and that true freedom is the ability to serve Hashem תמיד with constant joy in every aspect of life.
