The Rebbe responds to the individual’s letter dated the 18th of Adar, in which he describes his financial difficulty. He had already given a deposit toward the purchase of a home with the intention of meeting the scheduled payments, but due to changes in his circumstances, he now finds it difficult to fulfill his obligations.
The Rebbe first asks that the individual provide his name and his mother’s name in Lashon Kodesh, in full, so that he can mention him at the holy resting place (Tzion) of his father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe, for a blessing that his situation should improve.
The Rebbe then advises that since the individual lives in a large city such as Yerushalayim, where there are many experienced and knowledgeable people, he should follow the teaching of our sages: “Teshuah berov yoetz”—salvation comes through much counsel. He should consult with others and seek practical advice on how to successfully manage and complete his financial commitment.
The Rebbe adds that since he has already given a deposit and entered into this obligation, it is understood that he should make every effort to bring the matter to a successful conclusion. Therefore, he should focus on finding ways to meet his commitments rather than withdrawing.
The Rebbe then provides practical assistance by enclosing a check from one of the funds established by his father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe. He explains that he heard from his father-in-law that these funds carry a special blessing, similar to the teaching of our sages regarding Iyov, that one who takes even a small coin from Iyov is blessed.
The Rebbe instructs him to combine this money with the rest of the funds he is gathering to meet his obligations, expressing confidence that the blessing associated with this fund will be fulfilled and assist him.
The Rebbe continues by explaining that in order to strengthen the connection between the recipient and the source of this blessing—his father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe—it is appropriate to study his teachings and follow his directives. This connection enhances the effectiveness of the blessing.
Therefore, the Rebbe suggests that, without making a formal vow, the individual should undertake the regular study of Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya, as is customary. In addition, he should establish fixed times to study the teachings and maamarim of the Previous Rebbe, ensuring that no more than three days pass without such study.
The Rebbe concludes by noting that nothing can stand in the way of a person’s will, and suggests that Rabbi Shlomo Yosef Zevin, of whom the individual writes that he is his student, will certainly be able to guide and advise him further in these matters.
The letter concludes with a blessing for good news.
Summary
The Rebbe combines practical advice with spiritual guidance, urging consultation, persistence, and completion of financial commitments, while strengthening connection through Torah study to draw down blessing and success.
