Letter #6046

6046 - Strengthening Memory Through Review, Tzedakah, and Daily Study

ט' שבט תשי"ח

The Rebbe explains that strong memory begins with repeated, in-depth review and modest conduct. He advises adding daily tzedakah before morning prayer and consistently observing the three fixed study portions of Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya, drawing added Divine assistance.

Letters of the Rebbe, volume 16, letter number 6,046, the 9th of Shevat, 5718. The Rebbe says, “I'm responding to your letter dated the 5th of Shevat.”

You know, a lot of times we wish we could have better memories, that we could remember things. And the person is writing to the Rebbe about his memory—the koach hazikaron, memory.

So the Rebbe says, first of all—I mean, he was concerned he was learning and forgetting—first of all, the Rebbe says, “You have to review your study many, many times, and also from the inside. You have to review; that’s the first thing.”

And the Rebbe says also to conduct yourself with modesty. It is interesting point, the Rebbe makes here: to conduct yourself with modesty helps memory.

And the Rebbe says, “In order to get additional support from Hashem in the above, so every weekday morning before the morning prayer, you should separate several coins for tzedakah.” And the Rebbe also says to him that he should keep the three classes of Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya.

So in summery the Rebbe says for memory: first of all, you gotta review many times and also from the inside, and to conduct modestly. And in order to get more siyata d'shmaya—the help from above—so before morning prayers, give some coins for tzedakah and keep Chitas.
