ולתוכן מכתבו המלא נמיכת רוח ונפילת רוח וכו' לא זוהי הדרך שהתווה הבעש"ט תלמידיו ותלמידי תלמידיו מאורי החסידות, אשר הדגיש פעם אחר פעם ציווי השי"ת עבדו את ה' בשמחה וכבר כתבתי לכו"כ מאנ"ש וכמדומה גם לכת"ר אשר באמת פסק הלכה היא ולא רק מדת חסידות, ופס"ד יסודי ועיקרי ולא פס"ד פרטי והוא פס"ד הרמב"ם סוף הלכות לולב, עיי"ש בלשונו עבודה גדולה היא, ובצירוף פס"ד בהלכות דיעות סוף פרק ג', נמצא כו' עובד את ה' תמיד וכו' בכל דרכיך דעהו, הועתק גם בטור שו"ע או"ח סי' רל"א. ואף אם בהתבוננותו במצב עצמו יתמה לשמחה מה זו עושה, כבר מלתו אמורה בספר תניא קדישא בענין שמחת הנפש וסיבותי' ואיך שאין הגוף ועניניו מבלבלים בזה, יעו"ש.
ויהי רצון שיבשר בחוזר בהאמור וכן אשר מוסיף בלימודיו בחלק התורה הנקראת אילנא דחיי, ואשר החיים והשמחה מתקשרים עד שמתאחדים זע"ז.

I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the fifth of Shelah, and certainly by now my response to your previous letter has also reached you.
Regarding the content of your letter, which is filled with low spirits and discouragement, etc.—this is not the path outlined by the Baal Shem Tov for his students and the students of his students, the luminaries of Chassidus. They repeatedly emphasized the command of Hashem: 'Serve Hashem with joy.' I have already written to many among Anash—and it seems also to your honor—that this is truly a halachic ruling and not merely a pious practice; it is a fundamental and essential ruling, not a particular one. This is the ruling of the Rambam at the end of Hilchos Lulav—see there in his language: 'It is a great service.' Together with the ruling at the end of Hilchos Deos chapter 3, it emerges that one serves Hashem always... 'In all your ways know Him.' This is also quoted in Tur Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim siman 231.
And even if upon reflecting on his own situation he wonders what place there is for joy, this has already been addressed in Sefer Tanya Kadisha regarding joy of the soul and its reasons, and how bodily matters do not interfere with this—see there.
May it be Hashem's will that you report good news regarding all that was mentioned above, as well as about your increased study in that part of Torah called Ilana D'Chayei (the Tree of Life), where life and joy are so connected that they become united with each other.
