Bikurim: Attributing Success to Hashem and Serving Him with the Mundane

The letter explains how the mitzvah of Bikurim teaches us to attribute our success to Hashem and to sanctify even mundane activities. By dedicating the first and best of our produce, we recognize Hashem's role and learn that serving Him extends beyond prayer and Torah study.

To all those gathered at the Melaveh Malkah on Motzaei Shabbos Parshas Teitzei in Monsey, led by Haraha"ch iy"a nu"n oseik b'tzt"z Moshe Pinchas HaKohen and vavac"h iy"a nu"n oseik b'tzt"z Gershon D'aleihem Yichyu. Shalom u'Vrachah!

I was pleased to learn about your gathering for the meal of David Malka Meshicha, where surely words of Torah will be spoken, making it a seudas mitzvah. It is well known what the Alter Rebbe said: what a chassidic farbrengen can accomplish, even the angel Michael cannot accomplish (see at length in Kuntres Amiras Tehillim).

Based on the well-known saying that the weekly Torah portion is connected with the various events of the week and that one can derive guidance for daily life from it—the coming Motzaei Shabbos begins the portion "Vehayah Ki Savo El HaAretz," where the mitzvah of bringing Bikurim is told. These must be from the best fruits produced by our holy land—may it be rebuilt and established speedily in our days through Moshiach Tzidkeinu—when it was a land flowing with milk and honey. From these first fruits—before taking any for oneself—they were brought to the Beis HaMikdash to thank Hashem Yisbarach for the blessing He placed in the fruits of the earth.

The Bikurim were not like other offerings to be burned on the altar but were given to the Kohen. From this we learn two things: First, that grain and fruit which grow after plowing, sowing, and harvesting—and all other labors connected with their growth—the first and best are not taken for oneself but are made holy by giving them to the Kohen.

Sometimes an argument arises: after all one's toil and effort invested, why should one have to give away a portion—and specifically from the best—for holy purposes? But upon reflection, one realizes this argument only exists when there is a lack of faith that "the fruit of the ground—You gave me, Hashem," thinking instead "my strength and my hand made me this wealth." Upon deeper thought, one sees this is contrary to simple faith—which every Jew possesses without exception; it just needs to be brought out so it affects daily life.

The second lesson from this mitzvah is that these fruits are not burned on the altar but given to the Kohen who must use them—as per Bikurim law—which shows that even physical enjoyment can be used for holiness (through Beis HaMikdash and Kohen), serving Hashem Yisbarach by eating these fruits just as one serves Him with other offerings by burning them on the altar as an olah or similar.

This is one of Chassidus' foundations: one must—and can—serve Hashem Yisbarach not only during prayer or Torah study but also through eating and during business dealings. Of course, this form of service requires deeper preparation, but its reward is greater.

In this sense, Bikurim applies even now—in exile, outside Eretz Yisrael—even on an ordinary weekday: when one sincerely says about everything he has that "this was given me by Hashem," it becomes sanctified so that its use itself becomes an avodah—service of Hashem Yisbarach.

With Bikurim in its literal sense in Beis HaMikdash came a blessing—that next year he should again fulfill this mitzvah with joy. So too now: using one's assets as Hashem desires brings His blessing so that next year one can do so again in even greater measure—with more satisfaction and joy.

Blessings to awaken good resolutions and fulfill them in coming days for ourselves and all Israel for good; with blessings for a kesivah vachasimah tovah—a good and sweet year.

Summary

The mitzvah of Bikurim teaches us both gratitude toward Hashem for our success and how even mundane acts like eating or business can become service to Him when done with proper intention. Recognizing G‑d as our source elevates all aspects of daily life into holiness.
