Dealing with Teachers Unwilling to Follow the Chabad Path

The Rebbe addresses how to handle teachers lacking devotion and unwilling to follow the Chabad approach. He advises that such individuals should seek positions elsewhere, as the spirit and education of Chabad schools must remain uncompromised.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

... Regarding teachers whose devotion is not at all as it should be, who are also unfit for teaching, show no progress in their work, etc., and do not accept guidance—it is surprising that there is even a doubt about this. Most importantly, regarding the last point: who knows what the future holds? The awareness that all teachers must firmly uphold the point that the schools—and especially their spirit and education—belong to Chabad and are under no other authority. Since this feeling must exist throughout the entire school year (about ten months), it is clear that this cannot be done merely by rote or coercion. Therefore, those for whom this is foreign and who absolutely refuse to accept guidance (and it is impossible that this would not affect their daily influence on students), it is better they find a position more suited to their own spirit, and the network schools will find teachers fitting for the network's spirit...

It is understood that all of the above is a general directive regarding the policy which the administration of the network should implement; however, it is not a directive concerning specific individuals—regarding them, the administration must decide based on knowledge of their character and past conduct.

It should be added—the students are many, while the teachers are few; a possible harm to many outweighs benefit to an individual. Especially as mentioned above—that now there is still time for an individual to arrange a position more suitable for himself elsewhere.

It is surprising you did not mention about "provisions for the way" given to students for vacation days. Surely you will fulfill this at your next opportunity. Also regarding teacher training during these weeks which pertains to the upcoming school year—it would also be worthwhile to point out general points and guidelines in each subject where improvement is most needed.

With blessings for success in all of the above and good news.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that maintaining Chabad values in education requires devoted teachers who accept guidance; those unwilling should seek other positions so students receive proper influence. The welfare of many students takes precedence over individual teachers' preferences.
