One versus many

יחיד ורבים

It refers to the relationship or tension between the needs, rights, or opinions of a single person (יחיד) and those of a group or majority (רבים). This concept is often discussed in the context of decision-making, leadership, and halachic rulings, where the question arises whether to prioritize the individual or the collective.

In Jewish thought, the balance between יחיד ורבים is essential. While the community is vital for the fulfillment of many commandments and for sustaining Jewish life, the value of each individual is also recognized and respected.
